This week I’m joined by Ger, Rob and Anna to put our nutrition IQ to the test. Are seed oils really responsible for obesity?Does calories in vs calories out still matter? Is raw milk actually healthier? Are processed foods automatically bad for you? And should we really be eating like our ancestors? We get into protein, carbs, hydration, micronutrients, food additives, diet culture and why focusing on one “bad” ingredient can distract us from the bigger picture. We also challenge some of the biggest nutrition claims doing the rounds online and discuss what actually matters when it comes to nutrition, health, body composition and performance.
Why do certain people piss us off so much — and what if our reaction says more about us than it does about them? In this episode, Ger, Rob and I explore the psychological idea of “the mirror”: that some of the traits we judge most harshly in other people can reflect our own fears, insecurities, values or parts of ourselves we've learned to reject. If you can't stand lazy people, are you terrified of becoming lazy yourself? If you judge people for wasting their potential, is it because you're scared you're wasting yours? If weakness makes you uncomfortable, were you ever actually allowed to be weak? We take the conversation back to childhood and look at where these beliefs begin — what we were praised for, what we were criticised for, the types of people our families looked down on, and the unwritten rules we may still be carrying into adulthood. We get into:The people we instantly judge — and whyPsychological projection and “the mirror”What our biggest triggers might reveal about usChildhood conditioning and family beliefsJudging laziness, weight, weakness and attention-seekingSuccess, ambition and wasted potentialMoney, status and feeling superior or inferiorWhen criticism is actually disguised envyWhy we struggle with traits we don't allow in ourselvesWhether our judgments are really our ownWhat we're most afraid of becomingLearning to turn the judgment back on ourselvesA conversation about ego, insecurity, childhood, self-awareness and having the courage to ask an uncomfortable question: What does the way I judge other people reveal about me?
From choosing ballet over university and building a career teaching and performing across Southeast Asia, to suddenly losing that career during Covid and having to completely reinvent herself, this episode is about what happens when life doesn’t go to plan — and how you build something new from it. We talk about Natalia’s eight years living abroad, the fear she had before ever getting on that first plane, transitioning from ballet into strength training, becoming a PT, returning to the UK and going through some of the hardest years of her life. Natalia opens up about starting again in her thirties, therapy, relationships, rebuilding confidence and finding strength both inside and outside the gym. We also get into why she created Bristol Gym Girls, the importance of female friendship and community, training for adventure rather than aesthetics, burnout and our relationship with social media, buying her first home, rediscovering her love of travel, and now bringing women together for adventures around the world. We cover:Ballet, perfectionism and body imageEight years living in Southeast AsiaLosing her career during CovidGoing from ballet to strength training and coachingStarting again in your thirtiesTherapy, confidence and resilienceWhy lifting can change far more than your bodyBristol Gym Girls and female friendshipTraining for life, not just aestheticsBurnout, phones and switching offIndependence and learning to enjoy your own companyRediscovering adventure and travelDoing things before you feel readyWhy Natalia believes women need to stop shrinking themselves to fit inA conversation about strength, adventure, reinvention and having the courage to build a life that actually feels like yours.
John Joe’s story is about much more than weight loss. At 21, he weighed around 24 stone. He went on to lose over 75kg, completely change his lifestyle, compete in strength and field sports, and eventually turn his own experiences into helping others through coaching. But losing the weight didn’t automatically fix everything underneath it. In this episode, we talk about John Joe’s relationship with food, emotional eating, bingeing, body image, shame, loose skin and the constant “food noise” that so many people quietly struggle with. We also get into grief, losing his best friend, learning to sit with difficult emotions instead of escaping them, and why understanding yourself can be far more powerful than simply trying to have more willpower. John Joe shares what his journey has taught him about discipline, self-worth, happiness and why lasting change often has very little to do with the number on the scales. A raw conversation about food, weight, identity, grief, strength and becoming comfortable with the person looking back at you. This is Ep. 179 of The Uneducated PT Podcast.
What does it actually take to build a great gym?In this episode, I sit down with Ian Molphy of KHP to talk about the realities of gym ownership, coaching and creating a place people genuinely want to be part of.We get into the transition from PT to gym owner, the numbers every owner should understand, retention, business values and some of the uncomfortable truths that come with running a gym.Ian also shares his philosophy on coaching — what matters beyond the perfect programme, when to push and when to back off, and what years of coaching experience can teach you that qualifications simply can’t.We also explore community and atmosphere, why people really stay at a gym, the difference between online and in-person coaching, where AI could fit into the future of fitness, and Ian’s advice for PTs coming through the industry today.A conversation about building better gyms, becoming a better coach and creating something people want to belong to.
Episode 177: Are We Designing a Better Life — or Just an Easier One?What happens when there are fewer young people, more of us are staying home, and new technology starts changing everything from what we eat to the names we give our children? This week, Ger, Niamh and Rob join me to dig into some fascinating statistics about how society is changing. We look at declining birth rates and what an ageing population could mean for the future of work, innovation and who supports older generations. We also explore the rise in social isolation among young people, why Friday nights aren't as social as they once were, and whether Netflix, TikTok, gaming and food delivery have simply made staying at home too good. Then we get into the GLP-1 revolution: if millions of people start eating less and losing weight, what happens to fast food, fashion, healthcare and the wider economy? Finally, we look at the extraordinary decline of the name Karen — and how memes and the internet can take something completely ordinary and permanently change its cultural meaning. Are we consciously choosing how our lives are changing, or is the world around us quietly changing our behaviour?
What does it mean to keep living when someone you love is no longer here?In Episode 176 of Heart Conversations, we sit down with health and fitness coach Frankie Lawlor for a powerful and deeply personal conversation about sisterly love, loss, grief and learning to live forward.Frankie opens up about losing her sister and how that loss has shaped the woman she is today. She shares what it means to carry her sister with her, to honour her through the way she lives, and to find strength and wisdom in the middle of grief.Because grief never looks the same. There is no right way to grieve. There is no timeline. And sometimes, learning to live after loss isn’t about leaving someone behind — it’s about finding a way to bring their love with you.❤️ In this episode, we talk about:The incredible bond between sistersLosing someone you love and learning to live onWhy grief looks different for everyoneCarrying a loved one’s memory into everyday lifeFinding wisdom, strength and purpose through lossHealth, fitness and looking after yourself through difficult timesLiving a life that honours the people we’ve lostLove, legacy and making the most of the time we haveFrankie’s story is a reminder that even through heartbreak, love remains — and sometimes the people we lose continue to shape how we choose to live.Real people.
