Erchana Murray-Bartlett has never been afraid of a big challenge. She ran 150 marathons in 150 days from the tip to the toe of Australia, raised money and awareness for the Wilderness Society, and later ran as an independent candidate in the federal election. Now, her record-breaking journey has been captured in the new documentary 150, directed by filmmaker Ryan Kennedy (who is also Erchana’s husband), and narrated by Australian TV show host and journalist, Osher Günsberg. Erchana reflects on the physical pain, mental monotony and unforgettable encounters behind her incredible feat, now immortalised on film. She shares how her love for Australia’s wildlife and the wild places that gave the challenge a deeper purpose. We also talk about the coincidental timing of Nedd Brockmann’s run across Australia, Erchana’s path from football to marathon running, life as a new mum and her general tendency to operate on “vibes”. FILM SCREENING: If you want to see the 150 film and you live close to the Surf Coast, Run With It and Torquay Run Club are hosting a screening (details below): Bells Beach Brewing, Torquay VIC Thursday 8th October, 6pm Live Q&A with Erchana, followed by the film screening Prize giveaways from Mikro Coffee Roasters, Tarkine and The Running Company Torquay Tickets available for $12 at fan-force.com/screenings/150-bells-beach-brewing/ -- Run With It acknowledges the Wadawurrung People, the Traditional Owners of the land on which this podcast is recorded, and pays our respects to Elders past and present. -- Subscribe to Run With It wherever you get your podcasts, so you don’t miss a thing! -- Follow us on Instagram: @erchana_ @runwithit.pod @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer
Andy Buchanan is back – and he’s the newly crowned Australian marathon champion! After a challenging year of injuries, marathon withdrawals and a very patient return to running, Andy crossed the Sydney Marathon finish line in 2:10:14 as the first Australian. He joins Elise to debrief the race kilometre by kilometre: the wildly fast opening, an unexpected gee up from one of the world’s fastest 5,000m runners and the brutal final descent that left his quads completely cooked. Andy also opens up about the difficult year preceding Sydney, including recurring femoral bone stress injuries, learning to fuel his body properly and watching Haftu Strintzos break his Australian marathon record by just two seconds. He reflects on separating identity from results, sharing the less glamorous parts of elite sport and why his coach Scott Westcott sometimes needs to remind him: “It’s not that deep.” It's always great to catch up with Andy. And let’s wait and see whether he chooses the camera or the car upgrade?! Content warning: This episode includes a short discussion about body weight and under-fuelling in the context of bone stress injuries (23-25 mins into the podcast). -- This episode is brought to you by Shokz, the leading brand in open-ear headphones. Two days after Sydney Marathon, Caitlin Scott is still using her hands to lower herself onto the toilet (ouch), and she’s got us all wondering how 2:31:11 on one of Australia’s toughest marathon courses could possibly count as just a “pass”? After finishing third in the Australian Championships on Sunday, Caitlin joins Elise to unpack the early gap that briefly had her dreaming of the win, the hills that turned the final kilometres into survival mode and her surprise at finishing just 45 seconds outside her PB. She reflects on racing with “goals, not expectations”, the marathon experience she is still building and why her dream debut may have been both a blessing and a curse. It’s already been a huge year for Caitlin, with a wedding, a difficult World Cross Country Championships, an Osaka Marathon she would rather erase from her World Athletics profile – mixed in with spectacular breakthroughs over 10km (31:38 in Launceston) and the half marathon (1:09:08 on the Gold Coast). She talks about now being coached by her husband Lachy, and the December marathon she definitely hasn’t announced. -- Run With It acknowledges the Wadawurrung People, the Traditional Owners of the land on which this podcast is recorded, and pays our respects to Elders past and present. -- Subscribe to Run With It wherever you get your podcasts, so you don’t miss a thing! -- Follow us on Instagram: @runwithit.pod @caitlinadams__ @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer
Forever after this conversation, I’ll picture Tim Vincent as a Bulbasaur running along the Kedron Brook with a Frankenstein Garmin on his wrist. And that sentence will make a lot more sense after you listen to this week’s episode… Tim is lining up at Sydney Marathon this weekend, and though it will be his seventh marathon, he feels he’s still learning the distance. The ASICS-sponsored athlete has run 2:09:40, represented Australia at a brutally hot World Championships in Tokyo and finished one second off his PB at the London Marathon earlier this year. Ahead of Sydney, Tim joins Elise to talk about the 200km weeks and race-specific hills preparing him for the challenging course, including one regrettable 40-kilometre run to the top of Mount Glorious. He reflects on the near-perfect day that carried him to a breakthrough in Frankfurt (his current PB), the “lawless” experience of championship racing in Tokyo and why his 2:20 there demanded far more than any 2:09 ever has. Tim also shares how starting a new job has unexpectedly energised his running, why he prefers running to “feel” over data and what he still hopes to squeeze out of the sport, as well as taking us back to where his incredible friendship with Liam Boudin began. You’ll really enjoy this one, and if you want to hear more from Tim afterwards, check out his Journeymen Podcast! -- This episode is brought to you by Shokz, the official headphones partner of the TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS. Elise’s latest injury has given her a good dose of perspective, and the beers are tasting pretty crisp on the other side (let's be honest)! In this episode of Sole Sisters, Elise and Alice talk about doing less (running wise), ramping up the parts of life that can fall by the wayside during a training block, and finding a healthier, more balanced relationship with the sport they still love (possibly too much). Naturally, there are plenty of side quests: Alice’s rapidly expanding tattoo collection, New York’s sweaty summer running scene, watching the Commonwealth Games from a crumbling villa in Crete, and plans involving Sydney Marathon and a bougie lap of Mont Blanc. When Jess Stenson last joined Run With It, she had just broken the Australian marathon record in Valencia. Eight months later, she’s back – 36 weeks pregnant, with baby number three kicking away as we record! After Valencia, Jess expected to feel fired up. Instead, the motivation faded and she wasn’t really “feeling it” in training. It took Haftu Strintzos’ Australian record on the Gold Coast, followed by a brilliant Commonwealth Games viewing experience, to bring it back. Jess talks about the Glasgow performances that brought the spark back, from Rose Davies and Jess Hull’s unforgettable finish in the 5,000m, to seeing Australian athletes succeed together in the green and gold. We also discuss the dwindling opportunities to represent your country as a marathoner on the world stage. Literally weeks away from birth (it's a girl btw!), Jess talks us through training during her third pregnancy, the lessons she’s carried from her first two, and why she’s far less concerned about losing fitness this time. With three kids soon in the mix, the bigger questions are around sleep, extra support and the logistical puzzle of fitting training in. Jess has also documented her pregnancy and training in Room for Growth, a YouTube series created to support athletes, coaches and families navigating exercise during pregnancy. It’s been a breakout year for Australian distance runner Ed Marks. And while you’re used to seeing him race in his Glenhuntly club singlet, you might see him sporting a new kit very soon... Fresh off becoming the fastest Australian man ever to debut over the half marathon , Ed joins Elise to unpack his recent race on the Gold Coast. We chat about the mindset shift behind a breakthrough season with shiny new PBs in the road 5k and 10k , and 10,000m on the track , why he's thriving as a self-coached athlete, and the meticulous planning that helped him execute that half marathon so damn well! We also discuss how Ed’s his recent performances have caught the attention of major running brands, with a new athlete representative behind him, and sponsorship opportunities now firmly on the table as his career reaches an exciting new level. We dive into his love of cross country, balancing engineering with elite running and why he believes Australians can run world-class times on home soil. -- Run With It acknowledges the Wadawurrung People, the Traditional Owners of the land on which this podcast is recorded, and pays our respects to Elders past and present. -- Subscribe to Run With It wherever you get your podcasts, so you don’t miss a thing! -- Follow us on Instagram: @marks_ed @runwithit.pod @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer
Meet your new Australian Record holder in the marathon!!!! Haftu Strintzos ran 2:06:20 on the Gold Coast last Sunday to break Andy Buchanan's previous record by two seconds. In case you missed it, this episode recorded in 2025 is essential listening and gives context to Haftu's incredible result over the weekend. -- Haftu Strintzos spent the first years of his life as a shepherd in mountainous Tigray in northern Ethiopia. He cared for sheep and cows and played hopscotch (the Tigrayan version) with the other shepherds. Now an Asics-sponsored athlete, with his sights on representing Australia in the marathon, Haftu has the most incredible story brimming with resilience and perspective. But to understand how he got from A to B, you’ll just have to listen to this episode. Haftu talks about some defining moments of his athletic career so far, including running for Villanova University in the US, finishing first Australian across the line at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Serbia, winning the 10,000m at the 2024 Oceania Athletics Championships and achieving silver in the 5,000m. After his half marathon debut in Melbourne last year , Haftu followed up with a blinder in Marugame in Japan, where he ran 60:36 and asserted himself as a real contender on the roads. Unfortunately, Haftu’s marathon debut was foiled by an injury that popped up just before Hamburg Marathon earlier this year. We discuss how he’s dealing with that injury setback, how training has changed since he transitioned to Adam Didyk’s Team Tempo and what Haftu’s big goals for the future look like. -- Run With It acknowledges the Wadawurrung People, the Traditional Owners of the land on which this podcast is recorded, and pays our respects to Elders past and present. -- Follow us on Instagram: @haftustrintz @runwithit.pod @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer
