His Argyle love is still strong. The disappointment of being released from the club he supported as a teenager could have been enough for Ben Tozer to drift into mediocrity. He didn’t. Instead, within a year Ben was on the move to Newcastle United after a successful season at Swindon Town. Rubbing shoulders with the likes of Michael Owen, Alan Shearer, Nicky Butt and Mark Viduka, Toze learnt the ropes on what would be a journey to well over 600 senior appearances – with nine different clubs. Being an avid Argyle fan, and playing mostly in the lower league, his path crossed with his beloved Greens on many occasions, a fixture he and his friends and family anticipated greatly. In later life, he flirted with Hollywood and helped Wrexham to succussive promotion successes. This is the story of, Ben Tozer. When Darren Purse signed for Argyle in the winter of 2011, he had already played and scored in a cup final, won promotion to the Premier League and had a couple of seasons at England’s top table. However, the seemingly impossible escape from relegation at the end of the 2011/12 season is the highlight of a 28 year-long career. It was almost a career that didn’t even get started, as Pursey pursued a job as a pilot. However, success early on with Orient and Oxford gave him a chance to prove how good he was and Birmingham City under the watchful eye of Trevor Francis was the making of him. Getting Chopsy. Martin Barlow is one of Argyle’s most colourful characters. Fondly remembered for his cheeky attitude, for his partying and above all else, his longevity as a player. He broke through as a teenager in the late 1980s, rubbing shoulders with Argyle legends such as Tommy Tynan, Kevin Summerfield and Kevin Hodges. Played under iconic managers like Peter Shilton, Neil Warnock and Paul Sturrock. And played in memorable matches including Burnley in 1995, Colchester United and Darlington in 1996 and Exeter City in 2002, albeit for the Grecians. His 13 years as an Argyle player was full of stories, antics, highs and lows and if there is one thing you need to know about Chopsy, he loved every second of it. The champagne super striker. When Tyler Harvey made his Argyle debut, there was already quite a bit of hype around him. He was a prolific goal scorer throughout his youth days and was catching the attention of sides in the Premier League. So it was of little surprise that when he was handed his first start on Boxing Day 2012, he was the star man (well star boy) – a goal at the Devonport End in the 90th minute. What was a shock was that he never went on to fulfil that potential with Argyle. In 60 appearances he only started 11 times and as the seasons went on the opportunities faded. Just 12 months after leaving Argyle, Tyler stopped playing full-time and embarked on a new career in the ‘real world.’ That coupled with a remarkable time at Truro City has led him to going back into the professional game aged 30. Well, one example is that of Josh Clapham, who joined Argyle in the summer of 2006 after excelling during his time at the University of Plymouth. Put forward by his uni coach, the legendary Fred Binney, he impressed Ian Holloway sufficiently to give him a contract for the season.
