Now the dust has settled on the 2025/26 campaign, Rhys sat down over Zoom with Ian and Alfie to unpack and review what can at best be described as a topsy-turvy season for Newport County AFC.We'll likely do our usual thing of releasing episodes about every fortnight over the summer break - but within that scaled-back schedule we hope to bring you a few special interviews, some hot takes on new signings, and maybe a few bits of bonus irreverence as we all lose our minds without any football to watch. In the meantime, check out our website for all the pod info you need, and drop us a line on the socials if you have anything to tell us. As usual, our theme tune is the original 1973 recording of Come On The County - and we are brought to you in association with our friends at the Riverside Sports Bar.Until next time, look after yourselves and each other, and above all Keep It County. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It comes down to this, 81 possible outcomes but only one that matters; keeping our league status!Join Ian Street, man on the Northern beat schlep across the Pennines with Holker Street in view and hopefully for the taking. Featuring a cast of familiar characters, come huddle in front of the tactics truck, bemoan the floodlights and much much more on this rollercoaster day, the final day of the season.Do check our website for all the pod info you need, or drop us a line on the socials if you have anything to tell us. Ep274 of the pod saw us review probably the craziest game of football any of us have ever seen, as Newport County came from behind to win 3-2 in the 108th minute against Oldham Athletic, putting us on the cusp of retaining our Football League status. A breathtaking game, with goals galore, a sending off, a missed penalty, a lengthy injury - all it needed was a dog on the pitch and it would have had everything. Many of you joined us after the game at the Riverside - but the sheer volume of background noise plus a technical SNAFU meant that the audio was sadly unusable. We're really sorry, but hope that those of you who came along enjoyed being part of the pod family over a beer or two. We were certainly grateful for your company. In lieu of that recording, Jamie and Ed hastily got together virtually on Sunday to relive a truly unforgettable day.Do check our website for all the pod info you need, or drop us a line on the socials if you have anything to tell us. A short episode, because Ep272 was a deep dive into County's accounts and Ep274 will be a "Live @ The Riverside" special, recorded after next Saturday's home match against Oldham. So for this one we just had a short chat with friend of the pod Marc Peplow about County's defeat at Whaddon Road, dwelling in particular on County's lack of goals this season.Don't forget that next Saturday will be our live show at the Riverside Sports Bar after the Oldham game. See you there. In the meantime, check our website for all the pod info you need, or drop us a line on the socials if you have anything to tell us. We delve into some off-field matters this week. Last month, Newport County released its latest accounts for the 2024-25 season. To figure out what they mean for the club, Jamie, Rhys, and first-time episode contributor Jack are joined by football finance expert Kieran Maguire. They ask Kieran:Whether the latest losses are cause for concernWhat relegation to the National League could mean financiallyWhat it takes to be a sustainable club in the football leagueYou should also make a note in your diary for our live show at the Riverside Sports Bar after the Oldham game on Saturday 25 April. Ed is joined by Hwyligan for this one, which manages to be a two-for-one special where we analyse County's massive home win over Harrogate whilst also keeping an eye on Rogerstone Women vs Sully Sports Woman in the spring sunshine at Rogerstone Welfare... We unpack how County ground out a vital win on Saturday, but also look at the progress which has been made under Christian Fuchs and ponder how Newport County might get over the line for survival.Ed also trails a bonus episode of the pod (out next Thursday) where we ask football finance expert Kieran Maguire about County's recent accounts, and you should also make a note in your diary for our live show at the Riverside Sports Bar after the Oldham game on Saturday 25 April. We bring you analysis of both of Newport County's defeats over the Easter weekend...Part 1 sees Rhys ask Hamid and Ed about the loss to Crawley, and then Part 2 is an Ian Street match diary from a pretty dispiriting trip to Notts County (joined by, amongst others, Dave & Iwan and Stu & Fraser). Such is our luck this season, the one bit of joyous audio - County's consolation goal - was unusable for technical reasons so it's an even glummer account than you expect.Gluttons for punishment that we are, we'll be back with another episode next weekend after the Harrogate six-pointer. In the meantime, check our website for all the pod info you need, or drop us a line on the socials if you have anything to tell us. Thanks as ever to the Riverside Sports Bar for their support of the pod - and we'll be there for a live show after the Oldham game on Saturday 25 April. Jamie is joined by Alfie for this episode in the aftermath of Newport's vital 1-0 home victory over Shrewsbury. Together, they wade through listener comments in a 606 correspondence special, unpacking the game, the star performers, and looking ahead to that final six-game sequence that will determine the team's fate.A huge thanks to everyone who provided their thoughts, feelings, hopes, and fears across the socials.
