Have you ever found yourself giving so much to others that somewhere along the way, you lost sight of yourself? Are you giving from a place of genuine love and connection, or from a deeply ingrained belief that love, acceptance, and belonging must somehow be earned? In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast, host Nicky Yazbeck is joined by her husband, Adam Yazbeck, for an exploration of reciprocity in relationships, the hidden costs of people-pleasing, and the delicate balance between giving, receiving, and honoring our own needs. From starting out as an actor to working in pediatric emergency and critical care nursing, Adam has pursued his passion for soulful connection, healing and the potential of the human spirit. His journey continues with the launch of his integrative psychiatric practice: Kanay Integrative Psychiatry, coming early 2027; focused on helping others discover and embody who they truly are through the blended modalities of western medicine, IFS, shamanic and psychedelic spaces. Together, Nicky and Adam explore what it truly means to be in “right relationship,” where connection is rooted in mutual respect, authenticity, and empowerment rather than obligation, expectation, or keeping score. They examine how childhood conditioning, attachment patterns, and the desire to feel worthy of love can unconsciously shape the ways we show up in our adult relationships. When does generosity become self-abandonment? When does kindness turn into resentment? And how do we recognize when our desire to nurture others is coming at the expense of our own emotional well-being? Nicky shares her personal experience during her ketamine training journey that deepened her understanding of self-love and the importance of directing the same compassion, care, and nurturing energy inward that she so naturally extends to others. Adam reflects on his own experiences of overextending himself professionally and the realization that constantly saying yes to others can mean having less emotional capacity for the people who matter most. Together, they challenge the notion that healthy relationships must always be 50/50, offering a more compassionate perspective on the natural ebb and flow of reciprocity through different seasons of life. Their conversation also explores the transformative power of healthy boundaries, honest communication, gratitude, and learning to ask for what we need without guilt or expectation. They reflect on the importance of recognizing the many different ways love and care are expressed, understanding our emotional capacity, and cultivating relationships and communities where giving and receiving feel natural rather than transactional. Ultimately, this episode is an invitation to examine the relationships in your life, including the most important relationship of all: the one you have with yourself. Are your connections nourishing and empowering you, or are you repeatedly abandoning yourself in an effort to maintain them? Can you allow yourself to receive as freely as you give? And what might become possible if you stopped trying to earn love and began trusting that you are already worthy of it? True reciprocity isn’t about giving equally. It’s about loving consciously, honoring boundaries, and creating relationships where no one has to lose themselves to belong. Chapters 00:00 Defining reciprocity as “right relationship” 04:03 How childhood people-pleasing shapes adult giving 09:06 Care versus transactions and keeping score 14:09 Recognizing self-abandonment and depletion 17:53 Nicky’s self-love experience and learning to receive 22:12 Why partners cannot be responsible for completing us 26:02 Hidden agendas, human needs, and the role of community 31:52 Why reciprocity is not always 50/50 36:08 Acknowledgment, gratitude, and different ways of giving 39:59 Ask for capacity, name your needs, and hold boundaries 43:55 Adam’s shift from overwork to protecting family time 48:04 Checking how relationships feel and closing reflections Action items: Notice how your body feels before, during, and after time with people in your life. Check your current capacity before agreeing to emotional support or social plans. Ask clearly for what you need, and state when a relationship feels one-sided. Set boundaries without treating a no as a rejection of the relationship; suggest another time when
In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast: Exploring Possibility, host Nicky Yazbeck welcomes Harmony Kwiker, MA, LPC, ACS, a psychotherapist, author, educator, and founder of the Institute for Spiritual Alignment and The Awakened Therapist approach. Together, they explore why so many of us struggle to create fulfilling relationships, how childhood attachment wounds influence our adult connections, and what it takes to move beyond old patterns to experience deeper intimacy, emotional safety, and authentic love. Raised in a family of healers, Harmony was introduced to meditation, breathwork, and alternative healing practices at a very young age. However, her own experiences in traditional therapy left her feeling pathologized and misunderstood, inspiring her to pursue a more compassionate and holistic approach to healing. Today, she serves as lead Gestalt faculty at Naropa University and teaches advanced somatic interventions at the Integrative Psychiatry Institute. She is also the author of four books, including Reveal: Embody the True Self Beyond Trauma and Conditioning, Align: Living and Loving from the True Self, The Awakened Therapist, and Holistic Co-Regulation. Through her teaching, writing, and clinical work, Harmony integrates Gestalt therapy, somatic healing, spirituality, and consciousness to help people reconnect with their authentic selves. Throughout their conversation, Nicky and Harmony explore how our attachment systems are deeply rooted in our nervous systems and how early relational experiences shape the ways we seek connection, respond to conflict, and experience love. They discuss how we can become so identified with our attachment wounds that we unconsciously recreate familiar relationship dynamics, even when those patterns leave us feeling disconnected or unfulfilled. Harmony offers a different perspective on healing, emphasizing that transformation doesn’t necessarily come from analyzing our past or trying to fix ourselves. Instead, it begins with learning to be present with our emotions, recognizing our nervous system’s survival responses, and developing the capacity to remain connected to ourselves during moments of discomfort. Drawing on Gestalt principles and somatic awareness, she shares how embodiment, self-responsivity, and compassionate curiosity can help us move through emotional dysregulation rather than becoming consumed by it. They also explore the importance of rupture and repair in relationships, challenging the belief that healthy relationships are free from conflict. Harmony explains how emotional security is often developed through the process of repairing disconnection, building trust, and learning to receive love more deeply. The conversation offers insight into cultivating secure attachment, developing greater self-trust, and creating relationships rooted in authenticity rather than fear or survival. Key topics: Harmony Kwiker's background and holistic and transpersonal approach to therapy The principles of Gestalt therapy and contact boundary disturbances Attachment theory and how early experiences shape adult relationships The importance of repair and self-regulation in secure attachments Working with trauma and unresolved childhood wounds in the present moment The role of embodiment and somatic practices in healing Practical steps for developing secure attachments and self-love Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Harmony Kwiker and the episode's focus 02:16 Harmony's early life and exposure to healing practices 04:23 Her journey into psychology and holistic therapy 05:04 Her unique lens: holistic and transpersonal approaches 07:04 Overview of Gestalt therapy and its roots 09:43 The brain's role in unfinished trauma and therapy techniques 10:47 Attachment theory and its impact on adult relationships 13:41 The importance of repair in secure attachment 16:14 Regulating the nervous system and attachment styles 18:26 Disorganized attachment and trauma responses 19:11 Working with attachment wounds in therapy 20:22 Healing attachment through self-responsivity and embodiment 22:37 Creating secure attachments in childhood 33:51 Fostering healthy relationships and self-trust 44:45 Harmony's books, podcast, and offering
In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast: Exploring Possibility, Nicky Yazbeck sits down with Bria Tavakoli, LPCC, a sex and relational therapist specializing in intimacy, sexuality, and relationships at Evolving Intimacy Psychotherapy. Bria is also the creator of Sex and Psychedelics 101 and brings nearly two decades of experience in yoga, meditation, and embodiment into her therapeutic work. Together, Nicky and Bria challenge the cultural myth that women’s sexuality inevitably fades with age. Instead, midlife can become a powerful time of sexual discovery, when women begin questioning old conditioning, letting go of shame, becoming more honest about what they want, and reconnecting with their bodies and erotic selves. For some women, their best sex may actually come after 40. They explore how early sexual experiences, trauma, body image, relationship patterns, and cultural expectations can shape sexuality throughout our lives. The conversation also looks at what happens when partners have different sexual needs, why sex can carry very different emotional meanings for different people, and how power dynamics can influence intimacy and connection. Bria and Nicky dive into shadow work, masculine and feminine energies, embodiment, self-esteem, grief, and the importance of curiosity and radical honesty in relationships. They also discuss sexual trauma and how turning toward our sensations and emotions can help us better understand what we need and desire. Ultimately, this conversation is an invitation to rethink what we’ve been taught about sex, aging, and desire. Midlife doesn’t have to mean becoming less sexual. It can be an opportunity to shed old expectations, explore parts of yourself that may have been hidden, and reclaim your sexuality on your own terms. takeaways: Many people have negative first sexual experiences that can impact their future. Midlife can be a time of empowerment and erotic discovery for women. Cultural myths suggest that women's sexuality fades in midlife, which is not true. Honesty and curiosity are essential for personal growth in relationships. Shadow work can reveal hidden treasures about one's sexuality. Balancing masculine and feminine energies can enhance relationships. Self-care and compassion are crucial for maintaining self-esteem in midlife. Friendships can also be a source of healing and support. Take good loving care of your body now. Look at changes holistically: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. Focus on what enlivens you and brings joy. Aging is a privilege; live fully while alive. Turn towards sensations and feelings for healing. Navigating sexual trauma can complicate relationships. Understanding sexual dynamics is crucial for intimacy. Power dynamics affect relationship satisfaction. Self-exploration is key to reclaiming sexuality. In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast: Exploring Possibility, I sit down with Britt Ritchie, a doctorate-prepared psychiatric nurse practitioner and founder of Mind Alchemy Mental Health in Denver, to explore ADHD in women and why it is so often missed until later in life. We talk about the ways ADHD can look different in women, particularly those with inattentive or combined presentations who may never have fit the stereotypical picture of hyperactivity. For many women, years of developing strategies, masking symptoms, overachieving, and simply working harder can keep ADHD hidden. Then perimenopause and menopause arrive. As hormones shift, strategies that once worked may become less effective, and struggles with focus, organization, motivation, emotional regulation, memory, and overwhelm can suddenly feel much more noticeable. Britt also shares her own experience of appearing successful and high-achieving while privately struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, and undiagnosed ADHD. We explore the relationship between ADHD, anxiety, depression, and burnout; what a thorough ADHD evaluation can look like; medication and treatment options; genetic and functional testing; and how lifestyle, physical health, and the nervous system can all be considered as part of a more individualized approach to mental health care. We also talk about the stigma that still surrounds psychiatric medication, why it can seem like “everyone has ADHD” today, how our increasingly stimulating environment affects attention, and the strengths that can come with an ADHD brain. Britt brings more than 18 years of healthcare experience spanning ICU and perioperative nursing, community mental health, hospital psychiatry, and academia. She earned both her MSN and Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Colorado and later served as an assistant professor. Through Mind Alchemy Mental Health, she now specializes in women’s mental health, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, burnout, and emotional exhaustion, combining psychiatric care with a holistic, mind-body approach. In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast: Exploring Possibility, Nicky sits down with Grizz Berr for a conversation about psychedelics, ayahuasca, plant medicine, and the growing movement toward legalization. While psychedelic medicines continue to gain mainstream attention, Grizz offers a different perspective: What could be lost when sacred plant medicines become legalized, commercialized, and removed from the traditions that have protected them for generations? Grizz is a provider of 5-star ayahuasca plant medicine retreats, offering U.S.-based weekend experiences designed for busy entrepreneurial parents. His retreats are rooted in traditional ceremony, authentic music, and teachings from the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil. After eight years of working with sacred plant medicine, Grizz traveled deep into the Brazilian Amazon, spending a month in the rainforest and more than six weeks traveling as part of an intensive journey into the traditions, teachings, and practices surrounding ayahuasca. Together, Nicky and Grizz explore the intersection of psychedelic legalization, indigenous wisdom, spirituality, healing, and commercialization. Grizz shares why he believes legalization may unintentionally threaten the sacredness of plant medicine traditions and discusses the difference between simply consuming a psychedelic substance and participating in a ceremony grounded in intention, preparation, lineage, music, and reverence. The conversation examines the importance of knowing where plant medicine comes from, how it is prepared, and the energy and intention carried throughout that process. Grizz also discusses training and experience for those facilitating ceremonies, reciprocity with indigenous communities, and the legal challenges faced by indigenous traditions, underground ceremonies, and plant medicine churches in the United States. As psychedelics such as ayahuasca, psilocybin, and other plant medicines become increasingly visible within mental health, wellness, and personal transformation spaces, this episode asks an important question: Can society expand access to psychedelic healing without stripping these medicines of their cultural, spiritual, and ceremonial roots? This conversation offers a thought-provoking perspective on the future of psychedelics and plant medicine—one centered not simply on whether these medicines should be legal, but on how they can be approached with integrity, responsibility, reciprocity, and respect for the indigenous cultures and traditions that have carried this knowledge for generations. Key topics: The importance of respecting indigenous traditions in plant medicine The effects of legalization on the sacredness of plant medicines The role of ceremony and intention in healing The legal challenges faced by indigenous and underground ceremonies The concept of reciprocity and energy exchange in plant medicine The difference between traditional and commercialized use of psychedelics The importance of proper training and preparation for ceremonies The impact of energy and intention in the preparation of plant medicines The legal cases and advocacy for indigenous rights in plant medicine The importance of sourcing and energy in the quality of plant medicines Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Grizz Berr and his background in plant medicine 03:56 Grizz shares his first experiences with ceremonies and the call to lead 08:01 The importance of sacredness and traditional practices in ceremonies 12:00 Legal challenges and the court cases of plant medicine churches 15:56 The impact of legalization on the sacredness and accessibility 19:45 The significance of source, intention, and energy in medicine 24:08 Training, experience, and the role of indigenous knowledge 28:07 Rules and principles for holding safe and sacred ceremonies 31:55 Reciprocity and honoring indigenous communities 36:10 The future of plant medicine and the importance of integrity Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity nickynamaste@gmail.com Connect with Grizz: https://safeceremonies.com/listings/cere
In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast: Exploring Possibility, host Nicky Yazbeck sits down with clinical herbalist, Ayurvedic practitioner, and functional nutrition counselor Lila Swanberg for a fascinating exploration of Ayurveda, mental health, gut health, spirituality, and our relationship with disease and healing. At the center of the conversation is a deceptively simple question: What are we digesting? From an Ayurvedic perspective, digestion extends far beyond the food we put into our bodies. We are continually taking in experiences, information, emotions, relationships, stress, technology, and the world around us. Lila explores how what we consume and our ability to process it can influence our physical health, mental and emotional well-being, and connection to ourselves. Lila introduces the foundations of Ayurvedic medicine, including the doshas and Ayurveda’s emphasis on balance, while exploring how this ancient healing system approaches health and disease differently from conventional Western medicine. Rather than viewing symptoms or individual parts of the body in isolation, Ayurveda considers the whole person: diet, digestion, lifestyle, mental state, environment, patterns, and the natural fluctuations that occur throughout life. The conversation also explores the increasingly recognized relationship between gut health and mental health, the role of herbs and herbal medicine, and some of the misconceptions surrounding popular natural remedies and adaptogens. Lila challenges the idea that herbs such as Ashwagandha and Shilajit are universally beneficial simply because they are natural, explaining why an individualized approach matters. Nicky and Lila also move beyond physical health to examine the impact of modern life. What happens when we are constantly consuming information, stimulation, technology, opinions, and expectations? And what might change when we become more intentional about what we allow into our bodies and minds? Lila Swanberg is a Clinical Herbalist, Ayurvedic Practitioner, and Functional Nutrition Counselor specializing in chronic and complex health patterns, particularly working with people who feel they have tried everything without finding meaningful answers. She has trained extensively and continues to study under Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa (KP), a highly respected herbalist and educator. Today, Lila runs The Virtual Natural Healing Clinic, working with clients throughout the United States and internationally. She is also the host of Lila’s Herbal Revolution and leads a mentorship community supporting practitioners in the natural healing field as they deepen and strengthen their clinical work. Key topics: Ayurveda and its origins The difference between Western medicine and Ayurveda Holistic assessment of health including diet, lifestyle, and mental state The role of herbs and herbalism in Ayurveda Understanding doshas and their impact on health The importance of balance and flux in life and health The connection between gut health and mental health Misconceptions and myths about herbal remedies like Ashwagandha and Shilajit The influence of modern society and technology on health and awareness Spirituality and purpose as part of health and healing Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity nickynamaste@gmail.com Connect with Lila: https://www.skool.com/path-to-practitioner-potency-3445 https://tvnhc.com/ Keywords: Ayurveda, herbalism, holistic health, mental health, gut health, spiritual wellness, natural remedies, health myths, adaptogens, self-awareness, doshas, ashwagandha, Shilajit
What happens when one of the most popular weight-loss medications collides with the realities of aging, metabolism, and muscle health? In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast, Nicky sits down with Dr. Corey Winn, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, strength specialist, and movement expert with over 15 years of experience helping people build stronger, healthier bodies. Dr. Winn specializes in supporting women through perimenopause, menopause, and beyond by focusing on what truly creates long-term health: preserving muscle, improving metabolism, increasing energy, and building resilience. Together, she and Nicky take a balanced, evidence-based look at the growing use of GLP-1 medications, exploring both their benefits and the important considerations that are often overlooked. Their conversation dives into why muscle is one of the body’s greatest metabolic assets, why rapid weight loss can come at a cost if nutrition and resistance training aren’t prioritized, and how bone density, strength, and metabolic health become increasingly important as we age. Dr. Winn explains why eating enough protein, fueling the body properly, and incorporating strength training are essential for anyone using GLP-1 medications, and for anyone navigating midlife. This episode is also an invitation to shift the conversation around aging. Rather than chasing a smaller body at all costs, Nicky and Dr. Winn discuss embracing a mindset that values strength, capability, vitality, and longevity. They explore body composition over the number on the scale, practical strategies for supporting metabolism, managing blood sugar and inflammation, improving recovery, and creating sustainable habits that support health for years to come. Host Nicky Yazbeck welcomes Roger Peterson, an artist, musician, writer, and construction consultant, for a conversation about love, grief, healing, and the unexpected growth that can emerge after profound loss. After the death of his wife, Brandy, Roger found himself moving through a grief that changed the way he understood life, love, spirituality, and connection. In this episode, Roger shares openly about the depth of that loss and the ways it continues to shape him. Rather than presenting grief as something to “get over,” he speaks about it as an ongoing relationship with love, memory, vulnerability, and acceptance. Together, Nicky and Roger explore how grief can open the heart in surprising ways, even while it breaks it. Roger reflects on the role of plant medicine and earth medicine in his healing journey, sharing how these experiences helped him access deeper layers of emotion, self-acceptance, and spiritual connection. He also speaks about art as a pathway for expression, allowing him to move feelings through the body and give shape to what words cannot always hold. This conversation moves through themes of love beyond death, continuing bonds with loved ones, messages and synchronicities, and the delicate balance of honoring the past while continuing to live fully in the present. Roger does not claim to have all the answers. Instead, he offers an honest and deeply human perspective from someone who is still learning, still healing, and still discovering what it means to keep an open heart after loss. Takeaways: Transformation through grief is possible and can lead to personal growth. Vulnerability is a strength that allows deeper connections with others. Grief can open individuals up to new spiritual insights. Letting go of attachments is essential for emotional healing. Love transcends physical existence and can be felt beyond death.
