Hello, Welcome to JUDO YA-YA, I AM your host FRED LOUIS, and I am also the Head Instructor at Zenbei Judo Team in Salt Lake City, Utah It's Black History Month: I am celebrating some of my African American Judo champions who I admired growing up as a kid. I would read the judo magazines back in the '70s and I would see guys like George Harris, Allen Coage, Robey Reed, Odell Terry, and others and I thought it was very cool to see black guy's doing judo too. They were my idols! I wanted to be l like them! The first show I am going to do is about Allen Coage. 1. Do you know who Allen Coage is? 2. Did you know that he was the second American to win a Bronze Medal at the 1976 Olympic Games, in Montreal, Canada? 3. Did you know he was the first African American to win a medal in Judo at the 1976 Olympic Games? 4. Did you know after Allen Coage retired from Judo Competition he started a successful career in professional wrestling? He was known as Bad News Brown" Does that ring a bell? It's a look into the United States Judo history and the contributions African Americans played in its development.
WHAT IF YOU WERE VISUALLY IMPAIRED? WOULD YOU STILL BE ABLE TO ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS IN LIFE? I AM GOING TO BE TALKING TO A YOUNG MAN, RON “SHOWTIME HAWTHORNE,” WHO HAS ACHIEVED MUCH IN THE WORLD OF JUDO AS A VISUALLY IMPAIRED ATHLETE. A JUDO PARALYMPIAN AND NATIONAL JUDO CHAMPION.

Today, the podcast is going to explain what the martial art of judo is. I wanted to do this for parents, teens, and adults who are maybe looking into getting into martial arts like judo and wanted to understand it better. Coach Steve Scott gives a great historical explanation of the origin and evolution of judo. He is very knowledgeable and is one of the best storytellers when it comes to talking about the martial art of judo. If you have any questions for Steve Scott you can find him on youtube, and Facebook, he has many videos there.
