Welcome! And thanks for listening. In this episode, I have the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Ken Berry, a board-certified family medicine physician, bestselling author of Lies My Doctor Told Me, and creator of the Proper Human Diet. As two physicians who have independently questioned many of the conventional recommendations surrounding nutrition and metabolic health, we have a fascinating conversation about what led us to rethink what we were taught in medical school and what the research actually tells us about the foods we eat. Dr. Berry shares his personal journey from struggling with obesity and prediabetes to discovering low-carb nutrition and the carnivore diet. We discuss the limitations of traditional diabetes dietary recommendations, the influence of food industry sponsorship on nutrition guidelines, and why so many doctors receive surprisingly little education about nutrition. We also dig into some of the biggest controversies in nutrition, including plant-based versus animal-based diets, whether grains and carbohydrates are really necessary for optimal health, and what happens when we look beyond the headlines of published nutrition studies. We take a closer look at research involving plant-based diets and type 2 diabetes, the importance of sustainable dietary changes, and why calorie restriction and short-term improvements don't necessarily tell the whole story. Welcome! And thanks for listening. In this solo episode, I wanted to share some of the fascinating research and insights I brought back from the recent Ketogenic Foundation conference. From the potential benefits of ketones for heart health and brain function to the latest research on ketogenic diets and chronic kidney disease, there is some exciting work happening in the field of metabolic health. How ketones may improve cardiac function in people with heart failure, how the brain uses ketones as an alternative fuel source as we age, and what long-term studies are showing about ketogenic diets, kidney function, and diabetes remission are just the tip of the iceberg. I also address some of the questions and concerns I've received about our transition from a plant-based, high-fiber diet to a low-carbohydrate, high-fat ketogenic approach. We take a closer look at the research behind dietary fiber, including whether we really need as much as we've been told, how fiber affects digestion and nutrient absorption, and why some studies have found improvements in digestive symptoms when people reduce or eliminate fiber. Finally, I share an update on my own health and some unexpected findings from my recent blood work. Despite improvements in my metabolic health, some of my glucose and insulin markers have raised new questions about my pancreatic function and the possibility of adult-onset autoimmune diabetes. I discuss why I'm pursuing further testing, what C-peptide can tell us, and why it's important to look beyond assumptions and evaluate each patient as an individual. Thanks as always for listening. Welcome! And thanks for listening. In this episode, I have the opportunity to sit down with my cousin Natalie Holmes, who has been following a carnivore diet for the past three and a half years. Despite our shared family history of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, we took very different approaches to nutrition. After years of struggling with trigeminal neuralgia, debilitating nerve pain, and the side effects of medication, Natalie began exploring the carnivore diet in search of a different path forward. What started as a one-month experiment turned into a major change in how she approaches food and her health. We talk about Natalie's experience with carnivore, the changes she noticed in her brain fog, skin, joint pain, weight, and overall quality of life, and how her experience led her to rethink what she had previously believed about nutrition. We also dive into insulin resistance, inflammation, carbohydrates, cholesterol, and the relationship between metabolic health and cardiovascular disease. This is a conversation about questioning conventional nutritional wisdom, learning from personal experience, and remaining open to new ideas as we continue to explore the connections between food and health. Welcome! And thanks for listening. In this episode, I sit down with Scott Hoover, also known as No Carb Runner, an ultrarunner and race director of Ultra Ultras. Scott shares his journey from struggling with anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and weight gain to discovering keto and eventually a carnivore diet. We discuss how he went from barely running half a mile to completing ultramarathons, including 100-mile and 200-mile efforts, while experimenting with zero-carb endurance running. We also explore traditional carbohydrate fueling, hitting the wall, recovery, and Scott’s experiments with ketones and continuous glucose monitoring. Beyond running, Scott shares his personal experiences with diet and mental health, his transition away from long-term benzodiazepine use, and the rewards of helping others through ultramarathon race directing. It’s a conversation about challenging conventional wisdom, learning from experience, and rethinking how we fuel our bodies. Thanks as always for listening. Welcome! And thanks for listening. In this solo episode, I wanted to give you an update on my own health, nutrition, and endurance journey over the past several months. After more than 20 years of being plant based, I've made a major shift toward a very low-carbohydrate, animal-based diet and have been closely tracking my glucose and ketones along the way. I've also continued running ultras, which feel better than ever on this new diet. We talk about what I've learned from making this transition, why I've changed the way I think about insulin resistance and metabolic health, and why I believe doctors have to be willing to change their minds when the evidence and our own experiences challenge what we've previously believed. I also share some of the things I think people on both sides of the nutrition debate can agree on, why I believe we should look beyond headlines and study abstracts and actually examine the details of the research, and why being willing to listen to people on the "other side" can ultimately make us better clinicians and better patients. Welcome! And thanks for listening. In this episode, I have the incredible opportunity to sit down with one of my lifelong mentors in both medicine and endurance running, Dr. Tim Noakes. I first discovered his work when I started running marathons in 1999, and his books completely shaped the way I thought about endurance training, hydration, and fueling. But Dr. Noakes' story is also a story of changing your mind when the evidence and your own experience tell you that something isn't working. We talk about his evolution from promoting high-carbohydrate fueling to questioning that approach, his own experience with type 2 diabetes and metabolic health, and the research that changed the way he thinks about endurance performance. We also dive into my own journey with insulin resistance, continuous glucose monitoring, low-carbohydrate endurance training, and what happened when I began experimenting with how I fueled my ultramarathons. This is a conversation about being willing to question what you've been taught, examine your own experience, and keep learning as the science evolves. Thanks as always for listening. Welcome! And thank you for listening. In this episode, I take a deeper look at some of the conventional ideas we’ve been taught about nutrition, carbohydrates, vegetables, meat, and metabolic health. We discuss what happens when we begin questioning the standard advice around what a healthy diet should look like, including the role of carbohydrates and insulin, the potential impact of constantly elevated glucose and insulin, and the debate surrounding plant-based versus animal-based nutrition. We also explore the importance of nutrient absorption, gut health, and metabolic health, and why sometimes the biggest changes in our health begin when we’re willing to question what we’ve always been told. Welcome! And thank you for listening. In this episode, I sit down with cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Philip Ovadia to challenge some of the conventional thinking around heart disease, cholesterol, nutrition, and metabolic health. After becoming morbidly obese and pre-diabetic himself despite being a heart surgeon, Dr. Ovadia began questioning the advice he had been giving patients and ultimately transformed his own health through a low-carbohydrate, ketogenic approach. We discuss why insulin resistance may be a much bigger factor in heart disease than cholesterol alone, the role of inflammation and metabolic health, and why Dr. Ovadia has completely changed his views on dietary fat, meat, and plant-based diets.
