I want to tell you about two births. Same woman. Same husband. Same house, more or less. And afterward, two completely different marriages. Not because one birth was easy and one was hard. That isn't what made the difference. I've thought about this for years and I want to tell you what I think it actually was. Have you ever tried to relax on purpose– and realized you had no idea how? That you could feel the tension sitting in your body, but you couldn't figure out which part of you to let go of first? In this episode, we're speaking with Sabrina Brooks. Sabrina is a wife to Sam, a youth pastor, and mama to Freeman and Whitley, who are four and one and a half and who were both born at home. She grew up in California and now lives in a small town in southeastern Illinois. And some of you will recognize her already– Sabrina is Cynthia's daughter, from episode 338. Cynthia went first in her family more than thirty years ago, and today we get to hear from one of the babies she birthed. Sabrina shares a year and a half with almost no cycles, the friend at a pickleball game who changed everything, and conceiving without ever having a period that month. She takes us through a first birth at forty-two weeks where she hit the wall and lay there certain she was about to be labeled failure to progress– in her own home. And then a second birth where she finally understood what everyone meant by embracing a contraction. Here's something I've watched happen more times than I can count. A woman prepares beautifully for her birth. Really well. And she's still blindsided. This doesn’t happen because she was lazy about it. It happens because she unknowingly prepared one part of herself extremely thoroughly and left the other four areas almost untouched, and she didn't know there were five. That's what today is about. What actually needs preparing, and what happens when you only do some of it. Have you ever felt like the Lord told you something about your birth… and then watched every circumstance line up to tell you it wasn't going to happen? Gracie Gould is a wife to Jesse and a mama of four in Greenville, South Carolina, where they work with a local Christian theater and homeschool their crew. She came to homebirth by watching her own mother do it — and one of her midwives turned out to be the daughter of her mom's midwife. In this episode Gracie shares four births: a planned homebirth that became a transfer and a short NICU stay, a homebirth in a fifth wheel camper trailer with a double shoulder dystocia, a hospital birth with midwives that surprised her, and a water birth at 42 weeks and 3 days after a pregnancy that tested her at every turn — breech at 32 weeks, GBS positive, two snowstorms, and castor oil that failed her twice. All four of her babies are here and healthy, and her youngest is on the recording with us. Have you ever looked at something in front of you and thought, "there's just no way"– no way that's going to fit, no way that's coming out, no way I can do this… and then watched it happen anyway? In this episode, Rebecca walks us through six births, and not one of them looks the same. A 38-hour first labor that ended in a hospital transfer. An eight-hour second birth she almost didn't believe was real. A three-and-a-half-hour third birth that woke her out of a dead sleep. A dreamy fourth birth with three answered prayers. A fifth where she had to do something she'd never tried to bring her baby down. And a sixth– a peaceful water birth where she found herself smiling through the contractions, whispering "birth is easy." We talk about surrender, about God's provision, about the difference between shallow positive thinking and real honesty, and about what it means to stand at the edge of life and death and choose trust. Episode Roundup: Let's start with the variation, because goodness– six births and not one of them matched. Thirty-eight hours and then three and a half. Ten pounds and then eight. Forty-two weeks and then thirty-nine. If you came into this episode hoping Rebecca would hand you a pattern– this is just how my body does birth– she gently took that out of your hands and gave you something better. She gave you a wide, wide field of normal. Your body does not owe you a formula. It's allowed to surprise you every single time, and that's not a problem to solve, it's just the truth of how individual each of these experiences really is. Next, I can't stop thinking about the surrender. Because underneath all that variation, there was one thing that never changed. Every birth, Rebecca came back to the same place– open hands. And with her sixth, she said out loud the thing that all her positive thinking had never let her say. Walking laps around her driveway with a toddler on her hip, she told the Lord that if He wanted to take her life, or her baby's, that day, she trusted Him with it. And what came on the other side of that honesty wasn't fear. It was peace. She said it herself– surrender and peace, they go together. I don't think that's a coincidence, my friends. I think those two always travel side by side. And finally, I want to sit with what she said about fear, because it's so important. There's no moral failing in being afraid. Everything we know about fear and tension in labor is still true– and also, you are allowed to come to your Father and say, "I'm scared." That's not weak faith. That's confession. That's honesty. And He can carry you right there in it. Now, does that mean if you just surrender hard enough your birth will be easy and pain-free like Rebecca's sixth? No, of course not– she'd be the first to tell you a peaceful birth isn't a reward for doing it right. But whatever your birth looks like, fast or slow, at home or transferred, it can still be one of the most sacred places you're ever called into. Rebecca called it a privilege. To be called into those places over and over again. I just love that. Bonus episode this week: Katelyn's solo episode, WThe Moment in Labor Nobody Warns You About, releases Wednesday 9/2. What if you could do all of it right– read every book, listen to every episode, interview the midwife, make the plan… and still walk into your birth completely unprepared? Emily Swann is a wife to John, a mama of three, and the woman behind For the Love of Breastfeeding, where she teaches a bodywork course for babies and toddlers and runs a six-month program for mothers called Guided and Grounded. She's a nurse, an IBCLC, and holds a master's degree in public health and nutrition. She also binge listened to every episode of this podcast before her first baby was born. In this episode, Emily shares three births that look nothing alike. Her first: a planned homebirth that became four days of labor, a house full of onlookers, and a transfer to the hospital. Her second: a baby born at 35 weeks after eleven days of an unexplained 105 degree fever, followed by the NICU and a readmission– and a mother who protected breastfeeding through all of it. Her third: a baby born at home, unassisted and en caul, on the evening she cooked an entire Thanksgiving dinner in labor. We talk about the difference between being informed and being formed, about drama versus transformation, about where a woman's authority goes when she hands it off, and about why the magnifying glass in the lactation world is pointed at babies instead of mothers. Bonus episode this week: Katelyn's solo episode, Why More Research Isn't Making You Feel Ready, releases Wednesday 8/26 and picks up exactly where Emily's first birth leaves off. Episode Roundup: First, the line I think a lot of you felt in your chest: "I had too much information and not enough heart." Emily had listened to every episode of this show. She'd read every book. She had a master's degree and a nursing license and she'd been the one at the foot of the bed for other women's births. And she still walked into that first labor with all of it sitting outside of her. Being informed is not the same as being formed, my friends. It never has been. Information is wonderful and I will hand you all of it that I have– but it does not become yours until it goes through your heart and your body and your practice. Emily is living proof that you can be the most educated woman in the room and still be waiting for someone else to do it for you. And I want to flag something for you here, because I don't normally do this. On Wednesday I'm dropping a bonus solo episode– just me, about ten minutes– called Why More Research Isn't Making You Feel Ready. And it is on this exact thing. I'd actually recorded it the day before Emily and I sat down, which is why you heard me interrupt her mid-story to tell her she'd just handed my own episode back to me. So if what she said about her first birth landed anywhere near home for you, come back Wednesday the twenty-sixth. It's the teaching version of what you just heard her live. Next, let's talk about what happened with the cervical checks, because I want to be careful here. For nine months Emily told her midwife she did not want to be checked. Then her midwife arrived, offered a check, and Emily said sure. And notice how Emily holds that. She says she wishes her midwife hadn't asked– and she also says she takes ninety-nine point nine percent of the responsibility for that birth. She doesn't hand it off. She doesn't villainize a woman who was, by her own account, nice. She just tells the truth about where her own authority went. And I think there's something enormous in that for us. The decision you make on a Tuesday afternoon in a prenatal appointment is not the same decision you'll be asked to make at three in the morning with a house full of people watching you. Practice saying it out loud when nothing is on the line. That's not being difficult. That's rehearsal. Third, drama versus transformation. Emily used the word drama over and over about that first birth– the calling of people, the playing it up, the performing of labor to try to make labor happen. And I offered the word production, and she took it further and said something I've been chewing on ever since: it's supposed to be a big experience, but it's not supposed to be a production. Internally enormous. Externally, quiet. When she had Arthur, her dad ate Thanksgiving dinner in her house and left, and her husband was upstairs putting the kids to bed, and she was in a dark bathroom having a baby. There was nothing to watch. That doesn't mean your birth has to look like that. Some of you want your mother there and your sister there and your best friend taking pictures, and that is beautiful and it is yours. But it's worth asking honestly: is that person in the room because I want her, or because I want the birth to be a thing that people saw? And fourth, this one is for the mamas deep in it right now. Emily's whole body of work came out of the ha
