I'm moving the Rough Sketch show to once a month because life (clients, interviews, and general chaos) is loud, and I'm using that extra space to go back to poetry — the thing that actually hooked me on art. I'm Timothy Kimo Brien, your resident instigator, and this episode is me dusting off 12 steno pads, putting pen to paper, and reading a rough sketch called "Going Back" that leans on jazz, nostalgia, and the messy, beautiful return to simplicity. The poem walks through late-night weariness, a mausoleum of depression, and the small ritual of scratching thoughts down as both warning and salvation — basically me trying to send postcards to myself from places I shouldn't have left. I talk about why prompts didn't stick, how I decided no prompt was needed, and why editing in a new way helped the work breathe. Stick around for the pieces I read, give me your honest take, and take this as your friendly nudge to tame that inner critic: create more than you consume, write a poem about what you're going through, and maybe share it with me. I'll catch you next month — same chaos, more poems.Poem:Going Back6 Sept 2026The record spinsThe arm lifts up,over, gracefullyI am back to 1992Looking at the hard-fought bagsunder my bloodshot eyesAching bodyAching mindVision is blurryDaily meditation doneFrench lesson doneThe house encompasses us all, creaks and moansAs the weather changes from an unforgiving summerTo the wet and dreary fallAnd I am looking at boxespiled up for recyclingMaking a modern art sculptureUnfinished diamond paintingBrushes hardened by dry acrylic paintand empty canvasesTwelve steno pads waitto become memorialsto my thoughtsThat I dare not share with my loved onesI’ve isolated myselffrom the rest of my homeI have created a mausoleum of depressionThere are no tickets for saleRemarkably, there is no line a mile long to enterSo I feel the only wayto fill the gaping holein my soulIs to go back to the beginningJazz playing in the backgroundLiving vicariouslythrough the disciplesof hard bop and coolPen to paper, releasing inner strugglesScratching my thoughtsNot as a user manualBut as a warningA warning of what not to becomeLetting the subconsciousout of its self-imposed prisonTo feel the sunlightthat finds its way into my caveTimidly, trembling, cautiouslyI’m going backto when I thought simplicityWas the way to beTo find the decisions that led meTo a place where I wasOr should have beenContentAnd remake those choices to stay thereI’m going backSo I can send postcardsto myselfFrom where I should have never leftHow do I get such great guests?PodMatch I use Podmatch to get the best guests on the show. In the final episode of Create Anyway: You’re Allowed to Make Art, we explore a powerful question that many artists avoid: What if what you’ve done is already enough?Throughout this series, we’ve talked about fear, identity, time, responsibility, and creative pressure. But at the center of all of it is a deeper tension — the belief that we are always behind, always lacking, always needing more before our work “counts.”This episode challenges that belief. If you’ve ever felt like:You’re not good enough yetYou started too lateYou should be further alongYour work doesn’t measure upThis conversation will help you reframe success and reconnect with why you started creating in the first place. In this episode, we discuss:Why artists constantly chase “more” and rarely feel satisfiedHow to redefine success without external validationThe importance of recognizing progress and effortLetting go of comparison and unrealistic expectationsCreating from a place of fulfillment instead of pressureThis episode is for:New artists starting later in lifeCreatives balancing art with full-time careersAnyone feeling behind or discouraged in their creative journeyArtists struggling with perfectionism and comparison1. The Endless Chase for “More”Many artists believe fulfillment is always one step aheadMore skill, more time, more recognition, more outputThe danger: never feeling like what you’ve done is enough2. Redefining Success on Your TermsSuccess doesn’t have to mean monetization, audience, or scaleFor many, success is simply: you didn’t quitFinishing something, showing up, and continuing counts3. The Quiet Value of Showing UpMost growth isn’t dramatic — it’s subtle and cumulativeThe act of returning to your art matters more than outcomesYou’ve already done something most people never do: you started4. Letting Go of ComparisonThere will always be someone ahead, faster, more visibleComparison keeps moving the goalpostPeace comes from focusing on your relationship with your work5. Enough Doesn’t Mean DoneAccepting “enough” doesn’t mean you stop growingIt means you stop withholding satisfaction until some future version of yourselfYou can continue creating from a place of fulfillment instead of lackHow do I get such great guests?PodMatch I use Podmatch to get the best guests on the show. Why is it so hard to create after a long day? In this episode of Create Anyway, we explore the real reason so many artists struggle to stay consistent—and it’s not laziness. If you’ve ever felt too exhausted to create, battled burnout, or questioned your discipline, this episode will help you understand the relationship between energy, creativity, and rest. Learn how to build a sustainable creative practice even when life is demanding. This episode is for artists balancing full-time jobs, family responsibilities, and the desire to create something meaningful without burning out.1. You’re Not Lazy—You’re DepletedThere’s a difference between avoiding your art and not having the energy for itMental, emotional, and physical exhaustion all impact creativityMany artists mislabel burnout as lack of discipline2. Creative Energy Is Not InfiniteCreativity draws from the same reserves as your job, family, and responsibilitiesIf you give everything away during the day, nothing is left at nightRecognizing your limits is part of sustaining a creative life3. You Don’t Need Full Energy to CreateThe myth: “I need a full tank to make something meaningful”Reality: small, low-effort creative acts still countShowing up at 30% consistently beats waiting for 100%4. Rest Is Part of the ProcessRest isn’t the opposite of creating—it fuels itStepping away can lead to better ideas and clearer thinkingBurnout kills more art than failure ever will5.
