September 13: JOHN CHRYSOSTOM: Glory to God for All Things

St. John Chrysostom, the "golden-mouthed" preacher, was exiled by an empress for telling the truth — and died still praising God. As archbishop of Constantinople, John's preaching demanded that wealthy Christians actually care for the poor outside their own church doors, which won him ordinary crowds and powerful enemies alike. Exiled for criticizing the empress, he died on the road in 407, his last words full of peace rather than bitterness. "Glory be to God for all things."
