Election day is upon us. Less than 24 hours before the midterm elections, New York Times Congressional Correspondent and occasional Vogue essayist Annie Karni stopped into the podcast studio to chat with Chloe and Taylor Antrim about the possible outcomes of some of this term’s most contentious races. With an eye toward some of the closely-watched races in Alaska, Michigan, Florida, Texas, and Maine, Karni laid out what the first 100 hours and beyond might look like for Hakeem Jeffries if Democrats take back the House of Representatives. The midterms are also a time to look ahead at the 2028 election cycle, and the group discussed the possibility of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez running for President. Karni also weighed in on the question of another Trump impeachment. “It's going to be a frustrating topic all of next year. Impeachment is one of the things that's not a unifying position.” They also revisited her popular Vogue essay published earlier this year about her compulsion to tell everyone from Chuck Schumer to Steve Bannon about her divorce. As a journalist, Karni isn’t accustomed to writing about herself and it gave her a great appreciation for those who do. “And I didn't really mean to be brave, but a lot of people said I was brave,” she chuckled, “but mostly I was overwhelmed by people sharing their own stories. People clearly found it relatable.” The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. No one does Halloween like Heidi Klum. For the past twenty-five years, Heidi has thrown her infamous star-studded Halloween parties where she’s used elaborate prosthetics to transform into Jessica Rabbit and even a worm. This year, she has slowly dropped hints about her costume including grotesque “body-horror like” close up images and a backpack. “I try to always come up with something that no one has done before. I also always try to come up with something unexpected, or it's a shape that maybe a human body doesn't normally fit in.” Heidi Klum told The Run-Through guest hosts senior fashion writer Christian Allaire (who has been covering Heidi’s costumes for the past six years on Vogue) and senior beauty and wellness editor Margaux Anbouba. On top of Halloween, Heidi is also a regular on our TV screens hosting Project Runway where she shares a hilarious story about the time Michael Kors passed out; and Germany’s Next Top Model. “I do the casting, and the girls come and they can't walk in heels, where I'm more like, "Well. I think you look amazing "But how am I gonna compare you to the others? You're so far behind, like, you can't walk." Heidi always makes sure to bring her family along with her to every adventure she’s apart of. Whether it was this year at the Vivienne Westwood show where her fashion obsessed daughter Lou went to a show for the first time or the times she’s come up with costumes for her husband Tom to wear alongside her. “ I always wanted to be Fiona and I didn't have my Shrek." And he's like, "I'll be your Shrek." I mean, he almost passed out that night. Shrek is big. All this mass he had to like, carry around and it's like, you know, it's like a big prosthetic piece of plastic, you know? So that was hard for him the first time around.” Earlier on the show, Chloe and Chioma caught up on what they had planned for Halloween. Chloe took inspiration from Heidi and will be Medusa while her kids are also going to “Geek out”: Artie will become Hades and Alice will be Meg from Hercules. Plus, Chioma or (Dr.Nnadi we should say) tells the story of receiving her honorary doctorate. And they catch up on the WNBA finals that will result in a fun spooky game on Halloween evening. Chloe and Chioma were back in the New York studio together for a special taping in which they discussed their respective November covers and a few select stories. They started off with the Jenna Ortega cover, shot by the “it” photographer Szilveszter Makó. As Chloe put it, Mako has been photographing “every cover under the sun, but we felt he was really the right person for Jenna, who is so doll-like in her demeanor, and he really made sense for this painterly approach.” They also pored over British Vogue’s cover story with popstar Lola Young, who has risen to stardom and been quite candid with her fans and the magazine about her struggles in the spotlight. “She’s a raw nerve in the best way,” Chioma said of Young. Inside Chloe’s issue, some of her favorite stories included Dodie Kazanjian’s profile on 99-year-old Alex Katz in his Maine home—he allegedly does 300 pushups a day—as well as her Up Front story about donning fancy pajamas in the wake of her husband’s passing. This issue transformed into a bit of a Maine affair with a birdwatching photoshoot in Bar Harbor. Another standout moment from the issue was a feature on Francesco Risso’s post-Marni project, the Bureau of Imagination in Milan. For Chioma’s issue, they were both excited to talk about Christopher Kane’s Mulberry debut with his big sister and longtime collaborator Tammy Kane. Vogue’s longstanding relationship with Kane was crucial to the success of the story. “It was a real coup because he secretly showed us the collection before the show,” Chioma explained, “which very few designers will let you do, understandably, because it's a debut and there's a lot of attention and pressure.” With Diwali just around the corner, they also spoke about Neelam Gill honoring her late mother through the festival of Diwali. Dame Helen Mirren, an actress with a storied career, has at long last entered her villain era. “I think it has to do with getting older,” she told Chloe and Taylor Antrim on today’s episode, “when you’re older, if you’re a woman, you have to be an awful, ghastly person.” Her latest “villain” opportunity comes in the form of playing writer Patricia Highsmith in A Talent For Murder, the latest film from director Anton Corbijn. The fictional film, based on a play, captures the final chapter of Highsmith’s life in which she was a devoted alcoholic and held many problematic views. She had become a recluse, living in a brutalist home in Tegna, Switzerland with her pet snails and drinking heavily. In this story, she is approached by a young, handsome New York publisher (played by Alden Ehrenreich) who has the impossible task of convincing her to write another book in her Ripley series. Mirren was first introduced to Highsmith through her husband Taylor Hackford and became a fan of her books as well as the many film adaptations. For her own transformation into Highsmith, the costuming was of immense importance. Highsmith wore notably masculine clothing and had a short neck and a hunched posture, especially later in her life. “so I got the costume people to build the shoulder pads up,” she explained, “and it gives her that sort of look that she’s about to pounce.” There was also the rage associated with her alcoholism: “she must have been terrifying in those days,” Mirren mused. When Mirren started her career, the roles were much less nuanced for women. “They really sucked,” she lamented, “and they’re so much better now.” If she were to give advice to that past self who was demoralized by the parts she was getting, she would tell her to be as rude as you possibly can! They also spoke about some of her recent iconic red carpet looks, the signature “stripper” heels she purchased on Hollywood Boulevard, and making her own clothes. Vogue has been a fan of Oh, Mary! since before the play transferred to Broadway. Now, ten Marys later, Bowen Yang has stepped into the lead role of Mary Todd Lincoln (X), making his Broadway debut just under a month ago. Marley Marius, who made her podcast debut in 2024 while interviewing Oh, Mary! creator and performer Cole Escola, joined Chloe again, this time to talk to Yang about starring in this wildly beloved production. Yang is a seasoned performer from years as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, but now is learning a new kind of endurance in the eight a week performances on Broadway. “I would just nod my head politely any time someone would say, like, "Broadway performers are athletes." And I never doubted it, but now I understand that it is absolutely true,” he told them. His secret stamina lies in a potent combination of energy drinks—Fuji Apple Celsius to be specific—and traditional Chinese medicine. When asked about his most Mary-like quality, Yang turned to the duality of the clown, “There’s the misunderstood outcast and the murderous deviant. It’s like Pennywise and Bozo,” he explained, “And I am certainly not murderous. But I have this trickster energy that coincides with this idea that we all have where we feel sort of alienated by the arbitrary rules of society.” So far, his favorite guest to come to the show has been Malala Yousafzai. And his hope is that Cher will one day make it to the theater. “I think Cher would really get a kick out of this. Like wow, that’s a horny legend. I feel comfortable saying that.” As for who should be cast next in the role of Mary? His votes are in for Keke Palmer and Lisa Rinna. Stay tuned!
