He teaches graduate courses in the history of economic thought and economic methodology and undergraduate courses in macroeconomics, European economic history, American economic history, economic development, and labor economics. His latest book is Why We Must Work: Economic Freedom, Fulfilling Work, and Workplace Democracy. In this episode, we focus on Why We Must Work. We start by talking about what work is, its evolutionary bases, and what work was like for most of our history. We explore the changes brought about by civilization and the state, and the work conditions after the industrial revolution, and the phenomenon of alienation. We also talk about work in the period between the 1940s and the 1970s, and the impact of neoliberal capitalism on the workplace and workers' rights over the past 40 years. We get into why it is urgent to humanize work, and explore two reforms suggested by Dr. Wisman: guaranteed employment and workplace democracy. We discuss whether Universal Basic Income could be a solution. Finally, we talk about the most likely future of work.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, HEDIN BRØNNER, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Check the website here: http://enlites.com/ Dr. Marlene Zuk is Regents Professor of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior in the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota. She focuses on emerging questions in behavioral ecology and evolutionary biology. She uses invertebrate systems to study the evolution of mating behavior and secondary sexual characters in natural populations. She seeks to understand how natural and sexual selection pressures shape the behavior, life history, and morphology of animals. She is the author of Outsider Animals: How the Creatures at the Margins of Our Lives Have the Most to Teach Us. In this episode, we focus on Outsider Animals. We discuss the term “outsider animals”, the animals we tend to choose as models, and the phenomena of anthropomorphism and anthropodenial. We talk about “clever opportunists”, and how animals adapt to new circumstances. We explore cowbirds and mynas, and how they change the way we think about invasive species. We discuss problems with conservation efforts. We talk about how we can learn more about monogamy and pregnancy from cockroaches. We discuss our fear of snakes, and our coevolution with predators. Finally, Dr. Zuk leaves a message about how we should deal with other species.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, HEDIN BRØNNER, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D.
