Part 1: Rabbi Spiro and Ellie are discussing the riots and demonstrations by Israel's Charedim who are against conscription and the cultural history behind the animus. How do we as a people with different visions of what the center of our lives should be start to reckon with the fact that we need each other. We begin with the history of the animus between the religious world and the secular zionist movements and how it has set us up today to not even be able to talk together and what kind of country we want Israel to be now and in the future. The final episode of our special series. Rabbi Ken Spiro, Professor Elan Javanfard, and Ellie Bass unpack how Ashkenazi and Sephardi/Mizrahi communities developed radically different responses to centuries of trauma — and how those responses still shape Jewish observance, identity, and reactivity today. In the wake of October 7th, those differences matter more than ever. This conversation explores why Ashkenazi Judaism became fear-based and perfectionistic while Sephardi/Mizrahi Judaism remained attachment-based and warm, what each tradition gets right, and what an integrated, resilient Jewish future could look like.Three components of Jewish resilience. Two wounds. One people. Listen now.Welcome to a special three-part series of Remember What's Next called Jewish History and Trauma. Ellie Bass and Rabbi Ken Spiro are in conversation with Professor Elan Javanfard who is a researcher and expert in Jewish intergenerational trauma. Together, we are going to trace the full arc: where our collective wounds come from, how they live in us today especially now and what healing might actually look like going forward.Find out more about Professor Javanfard and his work: https://www.elanjavanfard.com/ and check out his blog: https://nefesh.org/blogs/Ejavanfard Want the full story? Part 2 of Jewish History and Trauma - In this episode Rabbi Spiro and Professor Elan Javanfard explore the chronological and psychological history and experiences of Sephardic and Mizrachi Jews and how their past has shaped and created those communities into the way we know them today. How does honour, respect and family play a huge part in these communities in both healthy and unhealthy ways, and how does a perspective on who is “outside” and “inside” create a loyalty and Jewish practice that is unique. Together, we are going to trace the full arc: where our collective wounds come from, how they live in us today especially now and what healing might actually look like going forward. This first episode in a special series examines how historical trauma shapes Jewish identity, focusing specifically on Ashkenazi Jews. The conversation establishes foundational concepts of trauma (capital T vs. lowercase t, individual vs. communal, intergenerational vs. multigenerational) and traces how 1,000 years of European persecution created distinctive psychological and behavioral patterns in Ashkenazi communities—including emotional restraint, hyper-achievement orientation, dark humor as coping mechanism, and somatization of distress.Find out more about Professor Javanfard and his work: https://www.elanjavanfard.com/ and check out his blog: https://nefesh.org/blogs/Ejavanfard Want the full story? What does our DNA reveal about who we are as a people? In this episode of Remember What's Next, we explore the genetic history of the Jewish people and what it teaches us about our shared origins, our journey through history, and the family-turned-nation we've become. We begin where it all began: in the Levant. The genetic evidence is clear — all Jews trace back to Judea, with roots firmly planted in the land of our ancestors. From there, we follow the threads of our story outward, examining how exile and survival shaped not only our culture and traditions, but our very biology. We trace the Ashkenazi journey through the Rhineland, the Sephardic experience in Spain and Morocco, and the long, rich history of Mizrahi communities across the Middle East and North Africa. We look at how being enslaved and dispersed by the Roman Empire scattered our family across continents, and how centuries of life in different lands left their mark on visible traits like skin tone, eye color, and hair — even as our core genetic identity remained remarkably intact. This is a story of one family that became a nation, a nation that endured exile, and a people whose genetic memory still carries the fingerprints of Judea after thousands of years. Join us as we connect the science to the soul of our shared Jewish story.Support the work: https://ko-fi.com/rememberwhatsnext Want the full story?
