When Moses asks God’s name, he is being sent into a situation he cannot control and carrying a calling he does not believe he can fulfill. God does not answer by building Moses’ confidence in himself. He reveals Himself as Yahweh—the God who is not defined, sustained, or controlled by anything outside Himself.Yet the God who needs nothing sees Israel’s suffering, hears their cries, remembers His covenant, comes down to rescue them, and promises Moses, “I will be with you.”Moses keeps asking, “Who am I?” God answers by revealing who He is.
