Situational awareness is the second fundamental of preparedness, and most people who use the term have never had it defined for them. In this Day 9 episode of National Preparedness Month, I cover what situational awareness is, what it is not, and why it matters for anyone building practical preparedness into everyday life. I walk through the working definition from Dr. Mica Endsley, the three steps of perceiving, comprehending, and projecting, and why paranoia and constant alertness are the opposite of the skill. I explain the situational baseline, the normal of your personal environment, and how awareness works by detecting a change of state against it, whether that change comes through your five senses or through the signal your subconscious sends before your conscious mind catches up. I also cover why a change is not automatically a threat, why the gut feeling gets checked rather than obeyed or dismissed, and how observe and orient feed every decision you make. Being prepared for survival and for ordinary problems starts with knowing what is going on around you. Prepping without awareness is guessing. This episode is where the skill begins.
