330: The OODA Loop—How to Stay Ahead of Danger

Episode Description from the Publisher

The OODA Loop is the thought process behind every decision you make when a situation changes, and most people have never had it explained past the four words. In this Day 11 episode of National Preparedness Month, I cover what the OODA Loop is, where it came from, and how it works for anyone building practical preparedness into everyday life. I walk through Colonel John Boyd, the Air Force fighter pilot who developed it after watching pilots in slower jets win over Korea, and I break down each of the four steps, Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act, with what each one looks like on a normal day. I explain why situational awareness is the Observe and Orient half of the loop and not the whole thing, how the fight, flight, or freeze response can hijack the Decide step, and the four kinds of action that come out of the loop. I cover how Jon Meis stopped a shooter at Seattle Pacific University by working the loop under fire, and how the same process applies in law enforcement and business. Being prepared for survival and for ordinary problems means deciding and acting on what you notice, not just noticing it. For a prepper, prepping is a loop, not a checklist. This episode is how you make that loop fast, accurate, and effective.
