Initially using Kratom in 2022 to boost afternoon productivity while juggling church ministry and a web design side hustle as a new father, Alex quickly escalated from one daily dose of powder to taking high-dose mitragynine extract tablets four times a day over three years. He hid the extent of his use from his wife. His turning point came about a month before a planned Disney World trip, when he realized he couldn't enjoy the "happiest place on earth" without the drug in his system, prompting him to confess to his wife and quit cold turkey. Now approaching a year sober, Alex reflects on how Kratom had numbed his emotions, disconnected him from his family, and caused numerous physical side effects he'd mistaken for aging, each of which resolved after quitting.
