Ep. 549 SWS The One Where Jenny Goes to the Guggenheim, Sees Gwyneth & Doesn’t Talk to Edward Norton

Jenny and Stacy are back, and this week we’ve got art, celebrity sightings, shopping, travel, family, and an extremely important investigation into whether Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson might actually be related.First up: Jenny went to the Guggenheim for Taryn Simon’s massive new exhibition, Father Country I Do Love You — and this one was especially meaningful because Taryn’s sister, Gillian, has been Jenny’s best friend since they were 11 years old.So yes, Jenny has known this family basically forever.The exhibition was nearly a decade in the making and takes over the entire Guggenheim rotunda. It follows the life of one unnamed FBI agent through an enormous web of stories involving American history, crime, politics, violence, memory and the national security state. There are more than 1,000 photographs, along with video, sculpture and text, and somehow all of these seemingly disconnected stories begin weaving together.But there’s another story running through the whole thing: Gillian, Taryn (and their sister Shannon’s) father — someone Jenny has known for most of her life.He worked for the U.S. government when he was younger — although his girls never completely understood exactly what he did — lived in Thailand with their mother, traveled extensively throughout Asia and other parts of the world, and documented those years in thousands of meticulously organized Kodachrome slides. He later developed Alzheimer’s as Taryn was creating the project, turning the exhibition into something even more personal: a meditation on fathers, memory, history, what we know about the people we love…and everything we never quite get to know.In other words, Jenny went to an art opening and emerged with approximately 700 things she now needs Stacy to read about.Also at the Guggenheim? Gwyneth Paltrow. Brad Falchuk. Drew Barrymore. Michael Stipe. Edward Norton.Jenny behaved herself.Possibly TOO well.She didn’t approach anybody because she didn’t want to be that person — but now she’s wondering why she didn’t at least say hello to Edward Norton, whom she had actually interviewed before. She really wanted to talk to director Shawn Levy and his wife Serena- Jenny met them on a family trip to Mexico 21 years ago! But she felt like if she had talked to him about her following his career for the past twenty years... Jenny thought she'd seem like a stalker.From there, naturally, we move to another culturally significant subject: Jenny’s new chenille house coat/sweater situation.It is soft. It is oversized. It comes in brown. Stacy probably needs one.
