St. Philip and St. James the Less (May 1) — From Dom Guéranger’s Liturgical Year

Philip, originally from Bethsaida, is portrayed in the Gospel as earnest and direct, bringing others to Christ and desiring to see the Father; after Pentecost he preached the Gospel with zeal, suffering martyrdom in Asia Minor. James the Less, often identified as the son of Alphaeus and associated with the early Church of Jerusalem, was distinguished for his holiness and austerity, earning the title “the Just”; he governed the Church there and bore courageous witness to the faith before being martyred. Born in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, he entered the priesthood in 1827 and, inspired by a vision to restore monastic life, reestablished the Benedictine community at Solesmes in 1833, becoming its first abbot.
