Saint Catherine of Siena (1347–1380) was a Dominican tertiary, mystic, and Doctor of the Church whose intense life of prayer was united to bold public action during one of the most troubled periods of the Church. Born in Siena, she embraced asceticism from youth and became known for her charity to the sick and poor, while receiving profound mystical graces, including her spiritual espousal to Christ. Though uneducated in the formal sense, she dictated letters of remarkable theological depth, exhorting clergy and rulers to reform, calling for peace among Italian states, and urging the return of the papacy from Avignon to Rome, a cause she pressed directly with Pope Gregory XI. Her principal work, The Dialogue, expresses a vivid theology of divine love, the soul’s union with God, and the necessity of virtue and obedience. Born in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, he entered the priesthood in 1827 and, inspired by a vision to restore monastic life, reestablished the Benedictine community at Solesmes in 1833, becoming its first abbot.
