The Little Falls Textile Strike of 1912-1913 was a pivotal but long-neglected event in American labor history. The story includes the dramatic struggle of immigrant women against powerful mill owners, brutal police repression, and a hostile press as they fought for their dignity and survival. The history chronicles how a walkout over reduced wages grew into a major labor conflict, drawing in powerful allies like the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), the socialist government of nearby Schenectady, and nationally recognized figures such as Helen Keller and "Big Bill" Haywood.Central to the narrative is the courageous work of nurse Helen Schloss, who, while hired by the town's elite to combat tuberculosis, ended up exposing her employers' husbands as the owners of the city's worst slums. In our latest, we talk with historian James Cheney about his new book “Women, Immigrants, and the Working-Class Battle in Little Falls, New York: The Textile Strike of 1912–1913.”Guest Bio// James Cheney (historianjncheney.Bsky.social) is an independent historian focusing on the labor movement, radical politics, and community action in the Mohawk Valley. Fifty years ago, America celebrated its bicentennial with a coast-to-coast displays of bunting, flags, community ceremonies, and constant talk about "hope" and "unity." Now as we face our semi-quincentennial, the country is riven worse than it has been in at least a century, and perhaps since the civil war. What happened in those intervening 50 years?Scott and Bob, joined by frequent contributor and comrade Clayton Lust, discussed the world in 1976 and how it changed to bring us where we area today. We talked about politics--in particular how the Democratic Party, at the height of its post-Watergate power, moved rightward to promote neo-liberalism and pave the way for Reaganis. We discussed the massive economic shifts--brought on by deindustrialization, a huge decrease in union work, lower wages, and higher prices. And we discussed the cultural shifts that the era brought us--the popularity of Saturday Night Live, hopeful movies like Rocky with more bleak films like Network or Taxi Driver, and the creation of new music genres like punk and rap.In all, in 5 decades, we've seen a huge transformation from hope and national pride, to division, anger, and even violence.Guest bio//Prof. Clayton Lust (@profclaytonlust.bsky.social)- Historian, activist, teacher, conqueror, warper of minds. Last week, they opened the Obama library in Chicago. You saw speeches by Barack and Michelle Obama, and all the living ex-presidents and first ladies celebrating the event. But all the fanfare left out his never ending support of neo-liberal economics, brutal wars abroad and how his progressiveness faded away quickly after "Hope and Change" propelled him into the White House. In our latest, we dive deep into the presidency of Barack Obama. We discuss his 2008 campaign, his bailout of the banks, tax cuts, Obamacare, how he handled the climate crisis, his foreign policy and war management and how he derailed Democratic politics and created the conditions that led to the rise of Donald Trump and the far right. --------------------------------Outro// "Green and Red Blues" by Moody🔗 Links🌐 G&R: Noam Chomsky on Why the Democrats Suck (https://bit.ly/4pwg6AD)🌐 G&R : The Democrats are a Party of War!
