The bow is strung with a strip of pre-recorded reel-to-reel magnetic audio tape instead of horsehair. A tape recorder playback head is mounted in the bridge or body of the violin. As Anderson draws the bow across the strings, the tape passes over the playback head, letting her play, repeat, reverse, or stutter spoken words, environmental sounds and music.
