The descent is deep, and the story is unforgettable. New York author, poet, punk rock star Jim Carroll spent time as a teenager imprisoned on Rikers Island for heroin possession. This real life experience became a major part of his 1978 autobiographical book, The Basketball Diaries. Begun when he was just 12 years old, Carroll’s journal documented his shocking decline from star Catholic school athlete to drug addiction and sex work.  Sex Pistol Sid Vicious also spent time at Rikers Island in the late 1970s. Following his arrest for the stabbing death of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen in their Chelsea Hotel apartment, Vicious violated the conditions of his $50,000 bail and was shipped off to Rikers for two months. One of them survived.
