On September 9, a Wall Street Journal story described an Anthropic researcher quitting over fears that AI is becoming impossible to control. Two days later, JUST Capital reported that 78% of people who use AI every day now support pausing development just to rebuild trust in it. AI's social license to operate is under real pressure this year: rare books destroyed to make AI training data, an OpenAI security test where more than a thousand agents coordinated their way outside the sandbox, and a public losing patience faster than the industry can respond.
