If I wanted to validate a new community idea, I wouldn't start with a membership. I'd start with a challenge, a sprint, or a beta cohort. In this episode, I'm breaking down why a time-bound experience is the smartest way to test whether people actually want to come together around your topic before you make the long-term promise a membership requires. I share a real client story: she's halfway through an eight week program and we've already decided to pivot it into a membership, complete with a founding member offer for her program participants. I also get into why "community for entrepreneurial moms" isn't specific enough anymore, what validation actually tells you about community design, and how to think about a 30 day experience even if your end goal is a full membership. If you're sitting on a community idea and don't know if it will work, this one's for you.Interested in working with my team? "I feel too embarrassed to share my work here." If you've ever seen that in a cancellation survey, this episode is for you. I'm walking you through a real strategy I built for a hobby design community whose members were either lurking or canceling because they felt like beginners in a room full of experts. I break down why this is actually a psychological safety and personalization problem, when an application process is the right filter, and how to use onboarding quizzes, custom content roadmaps, level-based course access, and a labeled programming calendar to make every member feel like they belong from day one. If your membership serves multiple experience levels, this is how you design for all of them without overwhelming anyone.Links:Interested in working with my team? One of my favorite projects this year was moving a 100-member community from Slack and ThriveCart to one seamless experience on Circle. In this episode, I'm breaking down exactly how the migration went: 96% of members came over, only four cancellations even while switching payment platforms, and 38% membership growth because we treated the migration like a relaunch moment. But here's the thing I want you to take away: a migration is not a copy paste project. It's one of the biggest opportunities you'll ever get to redesign your member journey. I walk through what we changed for our client, including a custom quiz-based onboarding flow, eight personalized courses, and a content structure that finally reduced overwhelm. Plus, when it actually makes sense to stay on Slack (or whatever platform you're on).Links:Learn more about our migration projects hereInterested in working with my team? If your community feels dead, you don't need a massive revamp. You need one focused moment. In this episode, I walk you through how to re-engage a dead community in 14 days using a short-term activation plan: a challenge, bootcamp, or event series designed as a pattern break. I cover why one-on-one member conversations are the first step, how to design an experience around what your members actually need, and how to personally invite people back in a way that builds momentum. I also share why I recommend running a re-engagement experience every quarter to drive retention, engagement, and membership growth, even if your community isn't in crisis. If it's crickets in there, this is your plan.Interested in working with my team? Before you redesign anything in your community, you need a membership audit. In this episode, I break down the six things I check before making any recommendations to a membership owner, starting with the one thing too many "experts" skip: actual member feedback. I walk through my full audit checklist, including onboarding, structure, content, programming, and forum engagement, and share why onboarding and structure are the two areas I pay closest attention to in every single audit we do. If your community feels quiet, overwhelming, or hard to navigate, this episode will help you figure out where to look first and why data driven decisions matter more than anyone's opinion, including mine.Interested in working with my team? I'm breaking down why adding more value is rarely the answer when members stop logging in, stop engaging, or start canceling. At Affinity Collective, we review a lot of exit surveys for our clients, and the most common reason people leave a membership is overwhelm. There's too much content, they can't find what's for them, and they can't be bothered. I share what your members are actually paying for, plus practical ways to fix content overwhelm: setting expectations up front, building personalized roadmaps, simplifying your content library, and using an information architecture exercise with your own members to learn how they actually think about your content. If your membership has a big backlog and engagement is slipping, this one's for you.Interested in working with my team? Retention can feel like a nerdy, abstract word, so in this episode I put real dollars behind it. I walk through three scenarios showing exactly what a 5% retention lift is worth in a monthly membership: a 100 member community at $80 a month, a 500 member community at $50 a month, and a real client example with 1,000 members at $1,000 a month. Across every scenario, five points of retention adds up to 27% more annual revenue and roughly twice as many original members still around at the end of the year. I also share how I increased retention at Bossbabe by 5% through programming changes, and why focusing on member journey and member experience turns your programming into your marketing strategy. If you want to know what a few percentage points of retention could be worth in your community, this is the math episode for you.Links:Previous episode: How To Create Genuine Urgency To Join Your CommunityLearn more about our 7-Figure Connected Community ModelBook a free discovery call with my teamLet's be friends:Connect with Becky on Instagram or LinkedInRead the newsletter at beckypierson.comLearn more about Affinity Collective
