Most of us have something we want to change. There’s a habit we want to break, a new routine we want to begin, or some part of our life we know isn’t working anymore. The temptation is to make one big, dramatic change. We create the perfect plan. We buy the supplies. We announce that this time, everything will be different. And we believe it, at least I do. The optimist in me always thinks that this time everything will line up perfectly. And sometimes that burst of energy helps. I start strong. My good intentions do help. Right up until something unexpected happens, or I have a busier than normal day or I’m not feeling it and then something has to give. So what will work? How can we make changes that we really want to make? There are lots of resources around this topic, one of the most popular is the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. He talks about making changes by taking micro-steps. Small, boring, consistent, repeatable steps. You drink one more glass of water. You walk for ten minutes. You write one paragraph. You move a small amount of money into savings. You put your phone in another room for fifteen minutes. None of those actions will transform your life in a day. But when you repeat them, they begin to change what you believe about yourself. You’re no longer someone who is trying to begin. You’re someone who has already begun. This is our reminder: don’t dismiss a step because it feels too small to matter. Small enough to repeat is exactly what we’re looking for. What’s one tiny action you could take today, and take again tomorrow? Keep it simple. Keep it doable. Let it be boring. Boring steps still move us forward.
