When you think of the various miraculous things the Holy Spirit of God does in us human beings, I wonder if your list includes “miraculous transportation”? What? Yesterday I left you with Philip and the African official who was responsible for the treasury of Ethiopia! Philip had been explaining Isaiah 53 to this African official, who was a devout worshiper of God, but he knew nothing about Jesus the Messiah until he met Philip. The African official had evidently believed all Philip had explained and he requested to be baptized as a public declaration of his trust in Jesus as his Savior & Messiah. Yesterday I left you with Philip, standing alongside the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. Have you ever been somewhere when you felt very much out of place? I think that is exactly what Philip felt. Why? Because a fancy chariot, with an obviously important African official, had just driven up and parked right near Philip. Philip was a very ordinary guy, and I imagine royalty and chariots might have made Philip feel a bit uncomfortable, particularly because suddenly Philip had a strong sense the Holy Spirit of God was telling him to approach that chariot! What? Without invitation that might be dangerous! Have you ever sensed a stirring in your soul which you felt was God leading you to do something which seemed, at the time, far outside your comfort zone? In that precarious moment, what did you do? In the past few days we’ve been looking at an unusual time in history as a great persecution suddenly broke out in Jerusalem, against all presumed followers of Jesus. Thousands fled, fearing for their lives. (Acts 8:1-3) Today, let’s continue following the flight of Philip, one of the seven selected to care for the widows… yet Philip had to flee Jerusalem for his life! Have you ever been forced to evacuate and relocate fairly quickly, even against your will? Normally that happens in the face of a natural disaster like a flood or earthquake or hurricane or sadly, war or terrorism. In fact in recent years millions of people have been displaced from their homes by terror. As we saw yesterday, that was happening in Jerusalem about 2000 years ago, and thousands of people were fleeing for their lives. WHY? Because an angry Pharisee named Saul of Tarsus was leading an unrestrained purging of Jerusalem.(Click here to see full text, images and links) Pastor Doug Anderson “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, with our eyes fixed on Jesus…” (Heb. 12:1,2)Have a comment or question about today’s chapter?
