Episode Description from the Publisher

Recorded at the Vedanta Society of Western Washington on June 25, 2017.In this lecture, guest speaker Swami Asutoshananda reflects on Sri Sarada Devi as the “awakener of souls,” presenting spiritual awakening as the indispensable beginning of spiritual life. Drawing on Sister Nivedita, the Katha Upanishad, and Swami Vivekananda, he explains awakening as becoming conscious of a new set of spiritual realities, values, and perceptions rather than continuing through life in a state resembling sleep. Using the Upanishadic image of two chariots, one guided by an alert charioteer and the other by one who is asleep, he emphasizes that even favorable circumstances cannot bring a person to the spiritual goal without an awakened mind. He then turns to Sarada Devi's own life, describing Sri Ramakrishna's worship of her during the Shodashi Puja as an awakening of her divine consciousness. Yet awakening, he stresses, is only the beginning. Sarada Devi followed it with intense meditation, repetition of sacred mantras, yogic disciplines, and a life of extraordinary spiritual practice. The second half of the lecture examines what Swami Asutoshananda sees as an essential but sometimes neglected complement to prayer and meditation: the disciplined transformation of everyday life. Sarada Devi accepted poverty and hardship without abandoning her spiritual ideal, cared for relatives amid the demands of ordinary family life, and undertook severe austerities, including panchatapa. Her example demonstrates three interconnected dimensions of spiritual practice: meditation and japa, acceptance of the circumstances of life, and austerity or disciplined mastery of the mind. Drawing on the Bhagavad Gita, Patanjali's teachings on tapas, svadhyaya, and Ishvara pranidhana, and Sri Ramakrishna's story of farmers whose irrigation water disappeared through unclosed rat holes, he argues that spiritual practices cannot bear their full fruit if unexamined tendencies of the mind are allowed to undermine them. Sarada Devi's life therefore offers both inspiration and practical direction: awakening must be sustained through self-discipline, self-examination, acceptance, and conscious cultivation of the mind. The lecture concludes with the assurance that when spiritual aspiration and the disciplined conduct of life proceed together, the seeker's initial awakening can mature into realization of the spiritual goal.
