🌙 As the new Hijri year begins and we enter the month of Allah, Muharram, Ustadh AbdulRahman Ali explains what this moment means for a Muslim, and why the believer does not mark it the way the rest of the world marks the new year. Ustadh AbdulRahman Ali covers the origin of the Islamic calendar and why ʿUmar chose to date it from the hijrah, the virtue of fasting in Muharram and on the day of Ashura, and how the salaf treated the passing of time as a reason to hold themselves to account ⏳ rather than a reason to celebrate. Rather than waiting for one day a year to begin again, the believer renews every morning 🌅. May Allah allow us to enter this year upon His obedience and to make the most of every day we are given. ✨ Timestamps: 0:00 Precap 1:03 Introduction 2:49 How The Arabs Marked Time Before Islam 5:41 Where The Islamic Calendar Came From? 7:23 How A Muslim Benefits From The Lunar Calendar 10:03 The Virtue Of Fasting In Muharram 10:50 The Day Of Ashura And Mūsā ﷺ 12:21 The Reward For Fasting Ashura 13:13 Do Muslims Celebrate The New Year? 17:29 The Salaf Who Dug Their Own Graves 18:19 Rejoice Every Day, Not Every Year 19:29 Hold Yourself To Account Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/abdu... Ustadh AbdulRahman Hassan walks through the famous answer of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah to a man who came to him complaining of being addicted to sins. In a single page, Ibn Taymiyyah outlined ten cures the same ten that Ibn al-Qayyim later expanded into the 700-page classic al-Dā' wa al-Dawā'. The ten cures cover turning back to Allah, humbling yourself before Him, making du'a at the times it is answered, seeking forgiveness, daily adhkar, patience, completing the obligations, keeping La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah on the tongue, never giving up on supplication, and the certainty that victory comes with patience and ease with hardship and that the door of repentance never closes, no matter how far one has wandered. In this episode of al-Muwatta, Ustadh AbdulRahman Hassan covers two major discussions from Kitab al-Taharah: does sleep break wudu, and what are the purity rulings around seawater and animals? The sleep discussion walks through the hadith of Safwan ibn 'Assal, the athar of Umar, Dalalat al-Iqtiran as a usuli principle and why it's weak landing on the position that it's not the sleep itself but the posture that determines the ruling. The second half unpacks the hadith "the sea is pure and its dead are permissible" and the hadith of Abu Qatada on cats drinking from wudu water. Several Usul al-Fiqh tools are broken open along the way a session that covers far more ground than the chapter title suggests. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/abdu... A concise biographical sweep of the Prophet's ﷺ life from orphanhood through prophethood, the Meccan persecution, hijrah, the conquest, and ultimately his death; framed not as a history lesson but as an emotional threshold. The Seerah details are kept deliberately familiar, building toward the real centre of gravity: the moment the Prophet ﷺ dies and the companions face the greatest calamity the Ummah has ever known. The Muslims once built the greatest libraries in the world. Today, our manuscripts sit in cities like Berlin and Princeton, catalogued by orientalists who've spent years learning our language while we scroll past our own history. In this lecture, Ustadh AbdulRahman Hassan walks through how the salaf approached books, why Yusuf ibn Tashfin crossed the sea at ninety years old to rescue Andalus, and why one Muslim ruler was humiliated into receiving letters from his enemy dictating the terms of his own defeat. The argument is simple and uncomfortable: if you don't read, your understanding of history will be whatever someone else decided to teach you such as Henry VIII and his wives, the Romans, the Tudors. Everything about who you are as a Muslim, what your civilisation built, and the ideological war being waged on your ummah right now, sits in books that are collecting dust. This lecture is a call to pick them up.
