Retcon has become a dirty word in nerd spaces—but some of the things we consider absolutely essential to our favorite characters weren’t there in the first draft.This week on Up Your Nerd Cred, CiCi and AM are talking about the fine art of retroactive continuity: when changing the past makes a character richer, a universe more coherent, or a story considerably better. The goal? A nice, neat laparoscopic retcon. Tiny incision, repair the problem, respect the surrounding anatomy, and please do not leave canon looking like an episode of Botched.We dig into Superman’s constantly evolving mythology—from leaping tall buildings to flying, Kryptonite, and the ever-expanding list of Kryptonian survivors—and how characters like Supergirl and Alfred Pennyworth became indispensable parts of stories they weren’t originally part of.Then we hit some of the best examples of new ideas becoming impossible to imagine the mythology without: Batman: The Animated Series turning Mr. Freeze into the tragic Victor Fries we know today; Harley Quinn making the jump from animation into the DC canon; and the Speed Force giving decades of Flash lore a common foundation.Marvel gets its turn too, with Wolverine’s bone claws, the resurrection of Bucky Barnes as the Winter Soldier, and a Mary Jane Watson retcon that gives MJ a whole lot more agency in Peter Parker’s story.And then there’s Jason Todd, whose original backstory was basically “what if Dick Grayson again?” before DC decided that stealing the tires off the Batmobile was apparently a much better entrance.
