In 1992, Vanity Fair published Lynn Hirschberg's profile on Courtney Love—punk's new "it" girl, who was courted by Madonna's record label, pregnant by 25-year-old Kurt Cobain, and a favorite of cool kids everywhere. The story contained at least six factual errors and made severe allegations, including claims that Love lied about her age and used heroin while pregnant. The piece triggered a Child Protective Services investigation, leading Love to later blame Hirschberg, in part, for Cobain's suicide.
