Sometimes, you just have to take on a big case, and very few are bigger in California True Crime History than the story of Richard Ramirez.Richard Ramirez, otherwise known as the Night Stalker, was one of the most terriflying and prolific serial killers in California history, which is really surprising as he was also a total idiot, with no plan, no motive, no anything but rage and hatred, and a horrible, messed up brain (thanks to his traumatic childhood). Part one of this two part episode takes a deep dive into that horrific childhood, focusing on both the nature and the nuture aspects of what made him the monster he was. And boy, is there a lot to focus on! His home life was awful, he was poisoned while in utero, and there were no adults he could trust, anywhere - not even at school!Tune in now to learn all about the life and crimes of Richard Ramirez, and please note, this is a big trigger warning case! And we're back! This week, we take a look at a sometimes heroine, sometimes villain, the woman, the myth, the legend - Betty Broderick! Everybody in the 90's knew her name; to some, it was mud, while to others, it was the name of a woman who finally said enough, and took matters into her own hands. Betty Broderick was raised with money, privilege, and the expectation that she would be a housewife with a rich husband. Betty did everything right, got her dream life, but then... along came Linda.Tune in now for all the crazy details from this story about love, lies, narcissism, and most of all, money, and decide for yourself: was Betty a mistread, misunderstood victim, or a cold blooded killer? This episode, we are going back in time a bit more than usual, all the way back to the 1920's, to a case that was such an important part of history, yet is so easily forgotten (possibly on purpose) that we had to bring it back to the forefront of all true crime listener's minds: The Greystone Mansion Murders! The Greyston Mansion was built in the 1920's by a family so rich and powerful, many streets, buildings, and even a beach are still named after them to this day. As with most uber rich families, the Doheny's had their fair share of secrets, and unfortunately for them, some of those secrets came to light while this mansion was being built. This coincidence of timing resulted in a very tragic end for an otherwise very charmed family, and brought the Doheny's to the front pages of every newspaper, in a way they would have all very much rather avoided, for many reasons. This week, we are looking at a case of a woman so dumb, so greedy, that her story is almost funny... almost. Had she not murdered one (maybe more) people, her craziness would be hilarious, but unfortunately, her horrible ways were focused on those she was supposed to love, and who certainly loved her, and turned from weird and silly to straight up dangerous. Tune in now for a crazy, strange, and very sad tale of a very greedy woman who let her need for money blind her from all else - love, family, and even self preservation. This week, we decided to not lean into the holidays, and instead do a totally random, but still completely horrifice, case of murder and mayhem. Instead of covering a Santa Slayer case, Cindy chose to cover a case out of a community close to her heart: skateboarders. This case, the story of the rise and fall of Mark "Gator" Rogowski, hits close to home for anyone who grew up in the skate community in the 90's (so, if you're old like me!) Even if you don't know this story, it's still a shocking and important part of California history, and true crime history. So tune in for all the ups and downs of this case (pun intended - you'll see what I mean) and Happy Holidays!Join us on instagram: True Crime CaliforniaEmail case suggestions to: truecrimecaliforniapod@gmail.comA proud member of the Darkcast Networki
This episode, we are continuing with survivors stories, with the incredible, horrible, story of Mary Vincent. Mary was only 15 when she ran away from her Nevada home in hopes of finding her grandfather. While on the way, she was horrifically attacked by a merchant seaman, and despite surviving, she was left with terrible, life altering injuries. The man, Lawrence "Larry" Singleton was given an insultingly short sentence, and as you can imagine, after his release, Mary lived her life in terror, until, unfortunately, tragedy struck once again. Tune in now to hear this awful tale about a young woman's horrible attack, how her attacker walked free to strike again, and how she was able to overcome what was done to her, against all odds. This week we're looking at a story of survival, which can be a great thing, but also has a lot of trauma related repercussions for the survivor, or in this case survivors - all 27 of them! This story, the Chowchilla Bus Kidnapping, was the biggest story - and largest mass kidnapping - California had ever seen, and to this day, there hasn't been a larger group of people kidnapped since. The worst part - 26 of the 27 captives were children, many as young and 5 or 6 years old. This tale is harrowing, terrifying, evil, and also, just plain stupid, as you'll see how unprepared, half assed, and dumb the kidnappers were (yes, they were absolutely caught). Tune in for this crazy tale, but beware - claustrophobia abounds!Sources:https://www.cityofchowchilla.org/300/1976-Bus-Kidnappinghttps://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/chowchilla-bus-kidnapping-frederick-woods-rare-photos-from-one-of-the-largest-kidnappings-in-u-s-history/32/Join us on instagram: True Crime CaliforniaEmail case suggestions to: truecrimecaliforniapod@gmail.comA proud member of the Darkcast Networki
