Constitutional lawyer John Carpay joins me to alert our audience to the Online Harms Act. This proposed legislation will return draconian powers to the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats, most of them woke and progressive activists, would decide if your comment is “hateful,” in their subjective view. You could be ordered to pay the federal government $50,000, plus up to $20,000 to a “victim” who felt offended or hurt by what you said. This $70,000 maximum does not include any legal costs you may incur to defend yourself. The Online Harms Act would give judges power to violate the liberty of Canadians based on what they might say in future. The Online Harms Act would add section 810.012 to the Criminal Code, enabling a complainant to assert to a provincial court that they “fear” that a Canadian will promote genocide or hatred in violation of the Criminal Code.
