How can the same container keep coffee hot for hours and also keep ice water cold?The answer comes down to controlling heat transfer.In this episode, we explore the engineering behind the vacuum flask—better known as a thermos—and break down how its design slows conduction, convection, and radiation at the same time.Heat naturally moves from warmer regions toward colder ones. That means a hot drink constantly tries to lose energy to the surrounding room, while a cold drink constantly gains heat from it.A thermos does not create heat or cold.Instead, it makes it much harder for thermal energy to move between the drink and the outside environment.We begin with the double-wall design. Between the inner and outer walls is a vacuum, meaning there are very few gas molecules available to carry heat.
