
What are the design elements of cards that make collectors want to own them? Design alone doesn't make a card desirable but it is certainly a core features that helps cards stand out in the crowd. These design elements are integral to the art form of trading cards. I go through some examples from my collection to highlight some of the core design elements that make their way into soccer cards and why I appreciate them, especially with my recent run of Topps Premier Gold Wayne Rooney cards that was a main focus for my 2026 collecting goals. I share my observations about how traditional and pop art motifs have started to appear in the sports card space and have translated into some of the more successful recent cards such as Kabooms.
