Draining the Ocean
On 18 November 1929 an earthquake off Newfoundland snapped twelve transatlantic telegraph cables, one after another, over thirteen hours. Nobody could say what had broken them, because nobody knew what the bottom of the ocean looked like. Episode 6 of The Slow Machine is about how we drew the sea floor. An echo sounder built to find icebergs and submarines, a Princeton geologist who never switched his off, and a Cold War surplus of instruments and money that sent ships out to measure everything. Mud that was far too thin, rocks that were far too young, and heat in the wrong place. Then a woman at a drafting table in New York, not allowed on the ships, who found a crack running down the middle of the Atlantic, and a telephone company's map of earthquakes that said she was right. The Slow Machine is a nine-part series on how we found out that the continents move, and why almost every clue came from an instrument built for something else entirely. Next time: Episode 7, "The Tape Recorder" — a Nobel Prize-winner who built a machine to prove his own grand theory and instead proved himself wrong, two continents with different North Poles, and the most spectacular rejection letter in the history of the Earth sciences. — Guest voice: Jane Goddard (Marie Tharp). Listening to the Inside
In 1909 an earthquake shook a valley south of Zagreb, and at stations far enough away the waves arrived twice. The man who worked out why was a meteorologist, and what he had found was the floor of the world. Episode 5 of The Slow Machine is about how we mapped the inside of a planet nobody has ever been more than a few kilometres into. A network of seismographs built to record disasters, and the Earth rung like a bell. Two kinds of shaking, one of which cannot cross a liquid. A thin crust, a molten core the size of Mars, and a mantle that turned out to be solid, which seemed to finish Wegener off. Then a South African geologist with a bicycle and a camera who stood on both sides of the Atlantic, and an English physicist who dated the rocks, asked what the Earth's heat was doing, and wrote down the engine. The Slow Machine is a nine-part series on how we found out that the continents move, and why almost every clue came from an instrument built for something else entirely. Next time: Episode 6, "Draining the Ocean" — a mountain range nobody knew was there, a sea floor with no old rocks in it at all, and a woman at a drafting table in New York who was not allowed on the ships. — Guest voice: Jon W (Arthur Holmes), found on Fiverr. Every quotation is listed with its source on this episode's page at theslowmachine.com. Written and narrated by Michael Goddard. Music composed with Suno. The Weatherman
In April 1906, two brothers went up in a hydrogen balloon over northern Germany and stayed aloft for fifty-two and a half hours, longer than anyone ever had. The younger one was Alfred Wegener. Six years later he told the German geological establishment that the continents move. Episode 4 of The Slow Machine is about the weatherman, who was a good deal more than that: an astronomer who walked into the newest science there was and spent his twenties studying a fluid. A torn newspaper, and the lines of print that run across the tear. His father-in-law's climate map, built to sort the world as it is, turned backwards until it found ice in the tropics and a lost South Pole. And why the idea lost — not small men shouting down a visionary, but a British geophysicist who did the arithmetic and was right. The Slow Machine is a nine-part series on how we found out that the continents move, and why almost every clue came from an instrument built for something else entirely. Next time: Episode 5, "Listening to the Inside" — what an earthquake tells you if you know how to hear it, and an English geologist who worked out how the engine works and admitted he could not prove a word of it. — Guest voices: Alex John (Alfred Wegener) and Tom H (Rollin T. Chamberlin), both found on Fiverr. Every quotation is listed with its source on this episode's page at theslowmachine.com. Written and narrated by Michael Goddard. Music composed with Suno. Two Facts That Cored the Apple
In the 1850s, the British survey of India recorded an error it could not explain. The Himalayas — the biggest mountains on Earth — were not pulling their weight. Episode 3 of The Slow Machine is about the two discoveries that wrecked nineteenth-century geology, and neither was made by a geologist. A half-ton brass theodolite, hauled up Indian hillsides so an empire could tax its territory, which revealed that mountains float. A drawer in Paris, a cloudy week and a fogged photographic plate. An instrument built to study squeezed crystals, turned on uranium ore. And a lecture at the Royal Institution in 1904, where a young physicist looked up and saw the most famous scientist in Britain in the audience. The Slow Machine is a nine-part series on how we found out that the continents move, and why almost every clue came from an instrument built for something else entirely. Next time: Episode 4, "The Weatherman" — a torn newspaper, glacial scratches in the tropics, and the most comprehensively demolished good idea of the twentieth century. — Guest voices: Jon W (George Airy), found on Fiverr, and John Cowan (Ernest Rutherford), who generously donated his recording. The Shrivelling Apple
Put an apple on a windowsill and leave it for a month. The inside shrinks, the skin does not, and it wrinkles. For about seventy years, that was the best available scientific explanation for the Himalayas. Episode 2 of The Slow Machine is about a good theory — simple, mathematical, and wrong. A cooling, shrinking Earth with mountains for wrinkles. Lord Kelvin, the monarch of British physics, using it to put a clock on the age of the world, and Charles Darwin losing sleep over the answer. Eduard Suess in Vienna, who brought clean water to a city with cholera and then wrote the face of the whole Earth in four volumes. And the fossils that would not behave: a seed fern on four continents, and a freshwater reptile the size of a cat on both sides of the South Atlantic and nowhere else. The Slow Machine is a nine-part series on how we found out that the continents move, and why almost every clue came from an instrument built for something else entirely. Next time: Episode 3, "Two Facts That Cored the Apple" — how mountains turned out to be icebergs, and how the most certain number in nineteenth-century science was off by a factor of a hundred. — Guest voices: Derek M (Lord Kelvin) and Alex John (Eduard Suess), both found on Fiverr. Every quotation is listed with its source on this episode's page at theslowmachine.com. Written and narrated by Michael Goddard. Music composed with Suno. Before the Question
In 1650, an archbishop worked out that the world began on a Saturday evening in October, 4004 years before Christ. Not the year. The evening. And he was not being foolish. He was being rigorous. Episode 1 of The Slow Machine goes back to before anyone thought to measure the Earth, when every culture already had an answer for what the ground is: Turtle Island, the body of a giant, a monster torn in pieces, a living mother who shakes when she is angry. Then the answers start to crack. A clergyman who refused to use miracles to explain the Flood. An irritable genius with a microscope who looked at fossil shells and saw creatures that no longer exist. A quarrel between water and fire. And a Scottish farmer in a small boat in 1788, looking at a cliff that made his friend "giddy". The Slow Machine is a nine-part series on how we found out that the continents move, and why almost every clue came from an instrument built for something else entirely. Next time: Episode 2, "The Shrivelling Apple" — the theory that explained mountains for seventy years, and a small reptile found on both sides of an ocean. — Guest voices: Derek M (James Ussher, James Hutton) and Jon W (Thomas Burnet, Robert Hooke), both found on Fiverr. The View from a Small Island
I grew up on a coral island, and I was taught that it had been lifted out of the sea by "earth movements". Nobody ever told me what an earth movement was. The textbook did not say — and it could not, because it was printed in 1963, and the answer arrived in 1968. This is the introduction to The Slow Machine: a nine-part series on how we found out that the continents move, and why almost every clue came from an instrument built for something else entirely. In this episode — a volcano in St Vincent that three generations of my family have climbed, and that erupted again in 2021. A school geography textbook that was already out of date by the time I opened it. A geologist I met walking the hillsides near my house, who spent thirty years measuring one small island, and whose account of it was published eighteen years after he died. And what Barbados actually turns out to be, which is not what I was taught, and is a great deal stranger. It also explains why someone who is not a geologist is the one telling you this. Next time: Episode 1, "Before the Question" — what people believed the Earth was before anyone measured it, and the afternoon in 1788 when a Scottish farmer looked at a cliff and saw the age of the world. — The passage read in this episode is from "Geology and Geomorphology of Barbados" by Robert C. Speed (Geological Society of America Special Paper 491, 2012), pp. 3-4. Written and narrated by Michael Goddard. Music composed with Suno. Sound effects from freesound.org, all Creative Commons 0.
