Go Broke Go Woke: An Odyssey into Esoteric Film & Christopher Nolan (September 18, 2026)

Christopher Nolan is one of the few directors in the world of film using traditional techniques mixed with practical modern effects to make his movies. For years he was accused of whitewashing and downplaying women alongside of criticism for telling his stories in a non-linear fashion with variations in the audio. He is also criticized for relying on explanatory dialogue instead of an overload of stimulating images. Suddenly, however, his movie The Odyssey is being called "woke" for the casting of racially-different actors and for interpreting the original story in a modern way, even portraying Odysseus as weak because the movie relied on the psychology of trauma. Ironically, the so-called diverse cast saw very little air time, and some of them were not horrible performances. Portraying Odysseus as more human and interpreting his journey through a modern lens is not in any way new to a Nolan film. Most of his films rely heavily on psychology and somewhat unorthodox dialogue. Some castings don't work, but others do; like when he was criticized for casting Heath Ledger as the Joker, which turned out to be one of the single greatest performances in cinema history. When asked about the "woke" accusations, Nolan doubled down on his body of work and made no attempt to justify it based on politics, race, gender, etc. In other words, it appears that accusations of "woke" are based on nothing but broken, hollow arguments that are looking for conspiracies and something to be angry about. In this case, it is coming from the right rather than the left. Furthermore, Nolan uses practical effects to create plane crashes, atomic bombs, and even giant cyclopes, instead of relying on CGI, something that again, ironically, something the anti-woke people are usually complaining about in Hollywood needing to change. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements.
