In 1587, more than 100 English colonists settled on Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina. When John White returned three years later, the settlement was abandoned. There were no bodies and no obvious signs of a struggle—only one haunting clue: the word “CROATOAN” carved into a post. So what happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke?
