Illness: When the Hard Thing Sets You Free

Episode Description from the Publisher

Have you ever had a feeling in your gut that just knew, that told you to keep going even when nothing around you confirmed it? Carly had one of those since she was a kid. And then, somewhere around thirty, it went quiet. If you have ever lost the thing that used to steer you, you already know how unmooring that silence can be. Carly's path winds through a childhood spent on stages, a move to New York at twenty-two, a pandemic that emptied out her industry overnight, and a second cancer diagnosis that arrived right when she had already started to lose her footing. She talks about sitting on a couch and telling the people who loved her most that she needed to go dark for a while, and how that one honest moment became part of how she found her way back. The shift here is not loud. It is the slow trade of proving herself to other people for simply loving the work because she loves it. By the end, Carly is lighter. Not because everything got easier, but because she stopped carrying things that were never hers to carry in the first place. What You'll Hear: How a lifelong gut feeling disappeared around Carly's thirtieth birthday, and what that silence revealed The pandemic years that emptied out her life in New York and quietly reshaped her identity A second cancer diagnosis at thirty one, and the couch conversation where she asked for permission to fall apart Why she chose to go dark instead of staying positive, and what that taught her about real support Starting a TikTok account from a hospital room and finding a community no support group could give her How a feature film role and a move to Philadelphia became proof that the hardest chapter also cleared a path forward Guest Bio: Carly Otte is a New York City & Philadelphia-based actor, improviser, and storyteller originally from Pittsburgh.
