Something has changed in America, and I do not mean the climate. Although somewhere at CNN, a panel of twelve people is blaming the weather on Donald Trump’s golf swing.I mean the people who used to control the national story are losing control of the story. The media used to decide what mattered, Democrats decided what you were allowed to call it, and the permanent political class decided what would happen no matter how you voted. That was the arrangement. You could participate in democracy as long as you understood that the adults in Washington had already filled out your ballot in pencil.But now the referees are getting thrown out of the stadium. CNN, MS NOW, and Politico have been barred from the White House grounds. CNN says it will continue covering the administration from outside. And I love that. CNN is now reporting on the White House the way a raccoon reports on a restaurant: pressed against the back window, furious that somebody locked the dumpster.They say they will not be deterred. Deterred from what? For years, these outlets could stand twenty feet from the president and still miss the story by three time zones. Now they are outside the fence, which may actually improve their accuracy. At least from there, when they invent the news, they cannot blame the White House lighting.And this is bigger than a press-pass fight. This entire show is about a political class discovering that its credentials no longer guarantee control. The media credential. The party credential. The nonprofit credential. The prosecutor’s badge. The judge’s robe. The famous family name carved into a government building. Americans were told all of those symbols represented authority. Increasingly, they represent immunity—immunity from being questioned, immunity from producing results, and immunity from admitting failure.Today we are going to test all of it.We are going to Greenland, where the man the Left called Putin’s puppet just helped block Russia and China from gaining a strategic foothold. We are going to New York, where a socialist congressional candidate seems eager to carry Mexico’s historic fight into the United States Congress. We are going to the Kennedy Center, where an institution named for Democrat royalty is facing a very unglamorous collision with money, maintenance, and Trump.Then, in Hour Two, we get to the machinery underneath the show: elections that are barely competitive, tax-exempt organizations that may have confused charity with political warfare, prosecutors who will not prosecute, and judges who appear to believe the law is a menu—order what you like and send the rest back to the kitchen.The theme is simple: who controls the controllers?
