I promised cocktails, so we’re going to drink cocktails. I didn’t promise that I’d find this week’s cocktail by any means more than randomly flipping through a cocktail book and picking one that looks tasty, though – but as it turns out, that’s a good method. The Fiesta Cocktail turned out to be a good one! It was a good start to some fun stories like the latest in the Lager House collaboration series coming this week, and the introduction of High Grain’s new canned cocktails: all fun stuff. From there – we had to take a big dive into the deep end as we tried to start unpacking the chaos of By Golly’s and their parent company Epic Eeats. As these things go, though… we got a little sidetracked by the very first part of the story. Looks like there will be more to talk about!
This week’s episode is about ‘Small Beers’ and their growth. It’s not just small format servings, though… breweries are leaning hard into lower ABV beers that meet drinkers where they are right now. The question that brings forth for me is what does this mean for drinkers? What does it mean for breweries, and most importantly – what the heck does it mean for the industry overall? It’s a booze fueled conversation… fueled specifically by a flight of four “Rums” – I say that lovingly… because one of them might have been some sort of rum-like NA option. It was weird, a little surprising, but in the end a great way to keep rolling through my warm weather Rum-exploration. In local news, through a label out of Rhinegeist, we might have a sneak peek at one of the first beers to come out of the New Riff collaboration (and I say ONE of, very carefully… because if I’m right – we might be seeing more than one of these!) Cuvee’s, plans for next week’s episode. It’s action freaking packed. I’m not one to pay attention to what other people do to influence what I’m drinking – but the recent annoucement of Cincinnati’s ‘HighBall’ in OTR got me wondering if this is a sign of people not wanting big drinks… or if it’s just a part of the natural ebb and flow of the bar industry. How does one solve a riddle such as this? You drink a big old HighBall, that’s how. We might be getting ahead of ourselves. To kick off this week’s episode of The Weekly Pint we’re continued the journey that is lovingly called the “rumination” – that is my journey thorough the world of rum (one glass at a time, of couse) with a taste of one that I haven’t been looking forward to: Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum. It might not come as a surprise to most of you who have tried it before – but it’s not very good. Lots of vanilla, very “fake” tasting… not something I’ll be chomping at the bit to try again any time soon. Evidently you’re supposed to put it with coke. I jumped into this week’s news with the closure of Highball, and then to make things a little happier, shared the fun news that Fabled Brew Works is currently on the way to Copenhangen for an international tap takeover. I’m not how that happens, or what the crowd at an event like this will look like – but I think it’s awesome, and if my wife would let me, I’d be on a plane right now to go support. From here, we covered the death of Schlitz at the hands of their Pabst ownership group a sad story for anyone who is a fan of legacy brands, or regional brands that hold on tight to the historic side of things. A chonky can of MadTree’s Queen City Pale Ale led into a detective session about what Craft Beer-centric restaurant might be for sale (or might be sold aready?) and that quickly moved into a can of something called Ožujsko – and no… I have no idea how to pronounce it. This time of year feels like it was MADE for drinking something tasty. So what type of gnome would I be if I DIDN’T have something? I continue my quest through rum with a little taste of some Rhum Agricole in the form of Rhum JM VSOP, and follow that up with two beers – a perfectly on theme can of Rhinegeist Summer (a lemonade shandy) and a can of Highgrain and Nine Giant’s ‘High Giant’ collaboration. Good show? Yeah, good show. Standard mistakes… yeah, I make some of those. With a bunch of fun new products being announced by local places this week, we have plenty to talk about on tonight’s episode of ‘The Show That Isn’t A Show” – fueled by a mystery beer pick (that ends up being so good I had to pick the second choice too)! The Rumination continues with a bottle of Plantation (or is that Plantaray?)… all in all… It’s a great way to kick off a new week! It’s been too long, folks… but the Great Ohio Beer Roundtable came to Cincinnati for 2026… and the result was a pretty epic conversation about all things Ohio beer – and the beer industry as a whole. I think we only scratched the surface, though – so we’ll probably need to do this one again sometime! This episode featured some really incredible folks from all around the state, talking about what they think makes this industry tick. Keri Sullivan and Chris “with a K” Burkhart (The Barrel Room in Canton and Canal Fulton) – Jason “Jugs” Jugenheimer (Mahoning Valley Flight Crew and Birdfish Brewing) – Rob Tittel (Northeast Ohio Craft Beverage News) – Jon Sicotte (Northwest Ohio Craft Beer News) – Brian Vick (Columbus Beer Aficionado, Various Social Media Admin) If you like this show, or really any of the content that I make – you can always support it by going to https://www.TheGnarlyGnome.com/support
This week is one of those weeks where this show allows me the chance to unload a bit. I’ve been feeling a little “put off” by the lack of care that has been put into too many beers these days, and over a pint of Tsingtao – very NOT local – I’m going to let loose. We’ll drink a little rum first, and then we’ll dive into it all. Of course, we’ll hit some of the other local news, like the return of Misrule Brewing and some hard soda hitting one of our local taprooms. It’s a great episode if you ask me! It’s that time of the year, again… and to wrap up Volume 11 of Cincy Brewcast I invited Bill Marx back on the show to talk about this year’s Bacchus Brewfest & Beyond. The festival is continuing to find ways to connect with drinkers, no matter what they happen to be looking for. From what’s in your glass to what’s keeping you entertained to the space that you’re enjoying it all in, they’re doing a great job of putting together a festival that folks actually want to go to. I cracked open a can of Fifty West’s Piggy Bank light, while Bill teased us with a bottle of a big barrel-aged stout from Rhinegeist, and together we figured out what makes a festival special as the drinks industry continues to try to figure out what it actually looks like. During the episode we mention that if you’re a listener to The Weekly Pint on Monday nights… you’ll have a shot over the next few weeks to win a few tickets – so make sure you’re tuning in around 9:30 pm every Monday to snag yours! You can go ahead and buy your tickets, or learn more about the festival by hitting them up on Facebook (there’s a link to the tickets on there) https://www.facebook.com/oakleybeerfest As a reminder, if you didn’t know already, this show is supported by listeners just like you.
