Fifty years after Carrie White went to prom, Stephen King’s story continues to give us plenty to talk about. This week, Bruce Markusen and Tracy Asteria revisit Brian De Palma’s Carrie (1976) in celebration of its 50th anniversary, then explore Mike Flanagan’s new series adaptation. From Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie to Summer H. Howell and Samantha Sloyan, we discuss the performances, Carrie’s difficult home life, and the cruelty she faces at school. We also look at how the series builds on its characters and brings the story into today’s world of social media and online bullying. Along the way, we chat about Easter eggs, Dark Tower references, the series’ ending, and what might come next in the confirmed second season. What did you think of Flanagan’s Carrie, and how does it compare with the original? Share your thoughts in the comments! Mad science, interdimensional monsters, and a perfectly mannered child with a murderous secret come together in this episode of The Ghostly Gallery. First, we enter the strange world of Stuart Gordon’s From Beyond (1986), a science-fiction body horror movie inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. We talk about the Resonator, the wild practical effects, and performances from Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, Ken Foree, and Ted Sorel. Then we turn back to The Bad Seed (1956), the disturbing story of an eight-year-old girl whose sweet appearance hides something much darker. We look at Rhoda’s cold and calculating behavior, the performances, and an ending that caught us completely by surprise. These movies approach horror in very different ways. One puts it right on the screen with purple light, monsters, and slime, while the other disguises it behind innocence and charm. Join us as we take a closer look at both films and share what we thought.
