Narcissism also exists on a spectrum. Not every narcissistic person is the same, and sweeping statements about what “the narcissist” always thinks, feels, or does can be misleading. There are different presentations and different degrees of narcissism, from narcissistic traits to much more destructive and malignant patterns. There are things we need to understand about narcissistic abuse. We need to recognize the patterns. We need to understand manipulation, projection, trauma bonds, hoovering, and why returning to a relationship without evidence of sustained change can pull us right back into the cycle. But eventually recovery asks us to stop looking outward and begin asking different questions.
