Do Christians Have Everything They Need for Godly Living? | 2 Peter 1:3–4

Our text today is 2 Peter 1:3-4: His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. — 2 Peter 1:3-4 Peter does not begin his letter by focusing on what believers lack. He begins with what God has already given. God's divine power has granted us everything we need for life and godliness. Our spiritual growth does not depend on willpower alone. It begins with God's power working in us through our relationship with Jesus Christ. This does not mean growth will be effortless or immediate. Peter will soon tell us to make every effort to develop godly character. But before he gives us that responsibility, he reminds us of God's provision. Whatever God calls us to pursue, he gives us the grace and power to begin pursuing it. That challenges one of our most common excuses: "I can't change." When yes, I can, and so can you. I'll admit that I sometimes live as though I am waiting for something else before I can obey God. I think I need more strength, more time, fewer distractions, or better circumstances. But this passage reminds me that, in Christ, I am not spiritually empty-handed. Neither are you. God has given us his power, the knowledge of Christ, and his precious promises. Through these gifts, we can escape the corruption produced by sinful desires and increasingly reflect God's character. When Peter says we become "partakers of the divine nature," he is not saying that we become gods. He is describing the transforming work of God within us. Through Christ, we begin sharing in the kind of life God desires for his people—a life increasingly marked by holiness, truth, love, and freedom from sin. You may feel powerless against a habit, attitude, or temptation. You may have failed so often that change seems impossible. But your past failures do not cancel God's present power. God may not transform everything in a single moment, but he has given you what you need to take the next faithful step. That step might be removing a source of temptation, confessing a sin, asking someone for help, opening your Bible, or choosing obedience when your emotions pull you in another direction. You do not need a different life before you can begin obeying God in this life. You are not spiritually under-resourced. God's power is present, his promises are trustworthy, and his grace is enough for your next step. So take that next step today. DO THIS: Identify one area in which you have been saying, "I can't change." Then take one small, specific step of obedience today. ASK THIS: In what area of your life are you most tempted to believe that change is impossible? How do God's power and promises change the way you view that struggle? What is one faithful step you can take today instead of waiting for better circumstances? PRAY THIS: Jesus, help me trust that your power and promises are sufficient for the next faithful step of obedience you are calling me to take today. Amen. PLAY THIS: Christ Is Enough.
