#436 The Skills Nobody Teaches: Standard, Ownership, and Preparation | w/ Tommy Short

The standard you bring to a game begins long before tip-off—and becomes especially visible when something goes wrong. In this presentation from Crown Refs camp, Tommy Short explores the habits behind dependable officiating: taking ownership of your development, preparing consistently, and responding to adversity with purpose. Through personal stories and practical examples, he connects the work between assignments to the confidence, composure, and presence you bring onto the floor. The challenge is to make your standard visible. Put rules study and film review into your routine. Pay attention to what your body language communicates. After a missed call or difficult interaction, bring your focus back to the next action you can control. These are skills you can practice at every level of the game.Take one idea into your next assignment: review a coach interaction with the sound off. Notice what your posture and approach communicate, then choose one adjustment to practice.Better habits give your next game a stronger foundation.Keep growing your game with Crown Refs.Visit our website: crownrefs.comJoin our Patreon community for more episodes and training: patreon.com/cw/crownrefs/membershipServe the Game.Chapters00:00 Intro00:12 The Team USA opportunity02:31 Readiness is built before the moment06:52 Crown Refs Patreon break09:17 Standards, ownership and preparation12:53 Make your personal standard visible14:24 A repeatable routine and two-pass film review15:40 Keeping the standard through a career change19:02 Recovering from the small losses24:10 Ownership and priorities28:43 The control / don’t-control exercise34:44 Confidence, attitude and effort38:19 Preparation and the next challenge43:19 Where your phone and attention fit45:52 Tommy’s closing — Serve the Game
