Fox released a new Bible drama this year called The Faithful: Women of the Bible, retelling the stories of Sarah, Hagar, Rebekah, Leah, and Rachel from their perspectives. If that sounds intriguing, don't get your hopes up. Unsurprisingly, this version of female empowerment very quickly became a show about blaming the women for every bad decision the biblical patriarchs make. This week, we're reviewing The Faithful episode by episode and talking about everything from questionable Bible interpretations and ancient Near Eastern anachronisms to hilariously bad wigs, bizarre plot twists, fake wolves, ancient pregnancy tests, and a ram subplot so ridiculous we laughed for five minutes straight. Was it historically accurate? Eh, sometimes. Was it theologically sound? Not really. Was it unintentionally hilarious? Also no. At least, not enough to redeem the six hours we lost to it. But since we watched it so you don't have to, it's your turn to join us now as we break down what The Faithful gets right, what it gets wrong, and why a show trying to celebrate the matriarchs of Genesis may have accidentally turned them into the villains of their own stories.Website: TheBibleUncut.com (show notes available in the blog section)Donate: TheBibleUncut.com/support-usDiscord: TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredEmail: cconn@thebibleuncut.comFacebook: TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredInstagram: @TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredTikTok: @BibleUncutandUnfilteredYouTube: @TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredEditor: Janna Connor
What if most of the things you've been taught about the Pharisees, the Law, and the Jewish context of Jesus and Paul are completely backwards? This week, we're honored to learn from Amy-Jill Levine, one of the world's leading New Testament scholars and a Jewish expert on the historical world of Jesus. We tackle some of Christianity's biggest misconceptions like:· Did Jesus really liberate women from a life of no agency? · Were the Pharisees actually the villains we've made them out to be? · Is Paul trading a works-based Judaism for grace-filled Christianity, or have Christians misunderstood him for centuries? We also explore supersessionism, Christian treatment of Jewish people, what it means for Jesus to fulfill Old Testament scriptures, and what respectful Christian-Jewish dialogue should actually look like. (Hint: It does not look like having Passover seders in church.)This is one of the most challenging, insightful, and important conversations we've ever had. If you’ve been wanting a better understanding of Paul, Jesus, or even just the New Testament, this episode is a must listen!Website: TheBibleUncut.com (show notes available in the blog section)Donate: TheBibleUncut.com/support-usDiscord: TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredEmail: cconn@thebibleuncut.comFacebook: TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredInstagram: @TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredTikTok: @BibleUncutandUnfilteredYouTube: @TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredEditor: Janna Connor
If there was a miracle drug that could guarantee you’d live a happier, healthier life, would you take it? According to Rebecca McLaughlin’s latest book, there is such a drug, and it’s called regular church attendance. Drawing on the work of a Harvard professor, she cites several studies, hoping to convince you that church attendance could save your life. But when I actually read those studies? Well, the data tells a very different story. This week, we take a deep dive into the studies behind the headlines and discover a much more complicated story. We'll explore what the research really indicates, what got left out of the conversation, and why the metaphor of church as medicine turns out to be more accurate than McLaughlin intended—just not for the reasons she thinks.CW for mention of suicide throughout the episodeWebsite: TheBibleUncut.com (show notes available in the blog section)Donate: TheBibleUncut.com/support-usDiscord: TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredEmail: cconn@thebibleuncut.comFacebook: TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredInstagram: @TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredTikTok: @BibleUncutandUnfilteredYouTube: @TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredEditor: Janna Connor
All Christians believe in Jesus. Far fewer actually follow him. This week, Chris Jones of Spiritual Hot Sauce joins us for a conversation about suffering, philosophy, Jungian archetypes, spirituality outside church walls, and why modern Christianity totally misses the point by pushing belief in Jesus as the primary goal.We talk about:· How common Christian answers to suffering fall apart· The difference between worshipping Jesus and actually following him· Discovering truth and value in other religious beliefs that intersect with Christianity· Finding meaning when life feels meaningless· And even how a groundhog sparked a spiritual experience Chris still carries years laterChris has a perspective unique among all our guests so far, and we’re excited to share this conversation with you today! You can follow Chris's podcast on Facebook, YouTube, or your favorite podcast player. When teenage Colin was spending every weekend playing inline hockey, there’s no way he could’ve known a conversation like this with an old teammate was somewhere down the road.More than a decade later, we may not be quite as sharp on the rink as we used to be, but apparently we still make a pretty solid team, just this time behind a mic. Longtime friend, local college prof, and prolific philosophy/theology blogger Eric Evans joins us this week for a conversation that covers a little something for everyone. We talk about some of the biggest misconceptions college students bring into theology, why epistemic humility matters now more than ever, and how Eric arrives at belief in God without a sacred text or religious institution. We also dive into what American Christianity and capitalism have gotten deeply wrong about the way of Jesus, why many of us may have been looking at prayer all wrong, and how to recover a sense of wonder in a post-postmodern world. What started as a reunion ends up being a really fun, nerdy conversation we hope you enjoy listening in on!If you liked hearing from Eric, be sure to subscribe to his Substack "A Sense of Wonder" and YouTube channel "Conscious Philosophy."CW for brief mention of the abuse and murder of Kelly Anne Bates from 46:30-48:00.Website: TheBibleUncut.com (show notes available in the blog section)Donate: TheBibleUncut.com/support-usDiscord: TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredEmail: cconn@thebibleuncut.comFacebook: TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredInstagram: @TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredTikTok: @BibleUncutandUnfilteredYouTube: @TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredEditor: Janna Connor
You know him from our conversations on the uncontrolling love of God, but what happens when theology picks up a camera? This week, Tom Oord returns as a photographer and filmmaker to discuss his brand new film, SEER: A Spiritual Natural Photographer Explores Love. Throughout the film, Tom shares his own stunning nature photography interspersed with deep reflections on love, God, beauty, healing, and more. We talk about why great photography isn’t just about taking pictures but making them, how photography reflects God’s relationship with creation, and why “God so loved the world” may be far bigger than we’ve been taught. This is a deeply personal conversation about nature, peace, creativity, and learning to encounter the divine by truly seeing the world around us. Nehemiah 2 isn’t the clean, inspirational leadership story it’s usually made out to be. Beneath the surface of quick prayers and open doors is a tense political drama. There is an anxious king with every reason to distrust, a calculated cupbearer waiting for the perfect moment, and a mission that may be as much about empire as it is about faith. There’s even a potential cameo from a fan favorite legacy Bible character that might totally change the way you read this chapter! And then there’s the wall. The thing we’ve been taught to celebrate may actually be the most unsettling part of the story. As Nehemiah claims God’s hand is behind everything, the text leaves a haunting silence where God’s voice never actually appears. This episode sits in that tension and asks the harder question: What do we miss when we’re absolutely sure we’re right in God’s name?Website: TheBibleUncut.com (show notes available in the blog section)Donate: TheBibleUncut.com/support-usDiscord: TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredEmail: cconn@thebibleuncut.comFacebook: TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredInstagram: @TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredTikTok: @BibleUncutandUnfilteredYouTube: @TheBibleUncutandUnfilteredEditor: Janna Connor
