What is fire made of? Why does wood in a campfire turn white? Why do embers glow brighter when you blow on them? Can you make fire without a lighter? And can you put out a fire without water or dirt?Seven-year-old Noah asked all five questions after an evening around a campfire with his family. Tonight, we follow his questions from the flames all the way back to the tree.A flame isn't the wood itself burning. It's gases rising out of hot wood and mixing with oxygen just above the log, which is why a flame can seem to float. The orange glow comes from tiny bits of soot, heated until they shine.Underneath it all is a surprise: once a log dries out, most of what's left came out of the sky. A tree builds its wood from carbon dioxide in the air, water from the ground, and energy from the sun. When the wood burns, most of that carbon goes back into the air. Back where it came from.We watch a log turn black, then gray, then white, and find out what charcoal and ash are made of. We learn why blowing on an ember can make it glow brighter, burn faster, and bring a flame back. Then we close our eyes and travel back thousands of years, to a cold night with no matches, where someone makes a fire from nothing but wood and motion while a child leans in close to learn.Fire is chemistry, physics, biology, human history, and the carbon cycle, all happening in one circle of glowing wood.Calm, true bedtime science for curious kids and the grown-ups listening beside them.Have a question of your own?
