Following his sermon Do We Keep Smiling and Say Nothing?, Pastor Ernie Gruen issued an open letter to Mike Bickle and Kansas City Fellowship, charging the movement with aberrant practices, false prophecies, and spiritual manipulation, which Gruen believed were unbiblical and harmful, igniting a major controversy in the charismatic church world.
