In this practical guide, experienced couture dressmaker Louise Johnson introduces the fundamental techniques required to design and sew an inner corselette. In part one, step-by-step instructions demonstrate the process of building an inner corselette, while part two unpicks the construction of six existing garments Louise answers a number of questions including ‘do I need to wear a bra’ for these garments. ‘What I have included are the most commonly used techniques and methods that will allow most projects to be undertaken with great success. Some techniques have not been described in literature previously, except as steps on a pattern instruction sheet, and so do not have names. I have therefore taken the liberty of categorizing and naming these in a way that seems logical to me and makes referencing them easier.’ Your first corselette is unlikely to be perfect; neither was mine. Start slowly with a simple project and give yourself time and patience to build your skills. Endless combinations of features are possible on an inner corselette and are limited only by your imagination. I hope that this book sparks in you a new passion that you find as exciting and rewarding as I have.' Louise is @demuredesigns on Instagram. Her Instagram grid is full of the works in progress you'll learn so much from. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Sam and Ruan discuss how SewFrugal began in 2020. The amazing discovery people experience when researching for free patterns when taking part in SewFrugal. Then we discuss how when a pattern becomes a paid pattern how much people continue to support the pattern designer so they can continue to develop new patterns for the sewing community. Searching for patterns has also affected the challenge and Ruan suggests people pop over to SewOver50 to learn more about using Instagram as Instagram keeps changing. We discuss how there are great opportunities for people who don’t know about sewing companies outside of the Big 4 patterns to find sewing patterns from around the world. Through Instagram and You Tube, there are many more connections people can make both online and in real life. Sam’s dream to run a sewing studio came to life 3 years ago. Ruan is also part of the Northern Sewl Sisters on YouTube. We talk tech as well as the series both Sam and Ruan have created. Freebie Friday and Tummy Friendly patterns. M Elaine Mackay, author of 19th Century Patterns for the Modern Body, gives listeners insight into a world where historical dressmaking can be used for modern day clothes design. In this episode, Elaine discusses the artistry, clothing features, and everyday practicality behind adapting 19th‑century pattern drafting for today’s bodies to create your own garments. Elaine guides us through each decade in the 1800s with the techniques featured in her Bloomsbury‑published step‑by‑step book—revealing how to interpret period silhouettes, translate classic drafting, and reshape historical garment elements for our bodies. You’ll be able to draft your own pattern blocks with the details provided in chapter 1. Elaine shares her clothing analysis process in chapter 2 so we can create our own analysis of clothing details from any era. Elaine provides clear instructions, rich historical context from many sources, and plenty of encouragement so you can create something you want, no matter what sewing level you’re at. Whether you’re a patternmaker, or sew your own clothes, a fashion student, or simply fascinated by how clothing connects past and present, this episode with Elaine Mackay offers an inspiring blend of pattern drafting, design creativity, and hands‑on guidance. Elaine’s thoughtful teaching style makes complex pattern design accessible. You might just decide that garment you saw at the V&A museum or at your local museum might just have the garment feature you want to create for your own clothes As a university lecturer, Elaine also provides the basic block drafting knowledge and her step by step period clothing analysis so we can benefit from her decades of experience working in museum collections including the V&A Museum. Her connections to Canadian museums are the historical dressmaking information Elaine shares in her insightful book. Hearing how these clothes became part of local museums is fascinating. This is a must‑listen and watch for sewists, patternmakers, and anyone who loves the intersection of fashion history and practical sewing in our current times.
