In this episode of The Self-Belief Podcast, Jenny explores rejection sensitivity dysphoria (RSD) and how ADHD can make rejection, criticism or even a small change in someone’s tone feel deeply personal. She shares how rejection sensitivity led her to panic, avoid difficult conversations, people please and replay interactions long after they had ended and the simple questions she now uses to separate what she feels from what she knows.Jenny also reflects on the difference between real and perceived rejection, and why learning to ask “What’s the evidence?” has helped her respond differently without dismissing her feelings.Perceived rejectionEmotional panicDifficult conversationsPersonal responsibilityConscious choiceThis episode will answer:What is rejection sensitivity dysphoria? What does rejection sensitivity feel like?Is rejection sensitivity linked to ADHD?Why do I feel rejected so easily? Why do I think people are upset with me?Why do I panic when someone is unhappy with me?Why does criticism affect me so much? Why do I replay conversations in my head? Why do I overthink someone’s tone of voice? Why do I assume I have done something wrong? Why do I avoid difficult conversations? Why do I people please when someone is upset? How do I deal with rejection sensitivity? How can I tell if rejection is real or perceived? Can ADHD make emotions feel more intense?Episode 147: What Happens When You Have Both ADHD and TraumaJenny explores how ADHD and trauma can overlap, and how understanding both can change the way you see your reactions, needs and past experiences.https://open.spotify.com/episode/1FmlNen06fYyq7WdV82aLm?si=2wfooIFeShmLSt1Je6a2OwEpisodes 143 - 145: My ADHD JourneyIn this three-part series, Jenny shares what life felt like before she knew she had ADHD, the moment she began recognising herself in what she was learning, and what receiving a diagnosis helped her understand about herself.https://open.spotify.com/episode/4HXUfAMcCRdDsGAzxhIhwL?si=rNw-kyUgRkGucM54gx91AAThese episodes explore the same wider themes of ADHD, self-trust, emotional awareness and learning to see yourself with more understanding.Listen to the Blame Series here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2BbqcCEpKA9kVOs46RiX1I?si=DuX_3KSKTHKNchM6eWegAwIf you'd like to go back even further, Jenny's Judgement series explores how fear of being judged, self-judgement and other people's opinions can quietly shape the way we see ourselves. Jenny explores why neurodivergent people may be more likely to experience trauma not because neurodivergence itself causes trauma, but because years of being misunderstood, criticised, excluded or expected to mask can shape how safe we feel and what we believe about ourselves. Drawing on her own late ADHD diagnosis, Jenny reflects on masking, self-doubt and the need for acceptance, and how understanding both ADHD and trauma helped her begin rebuilding self-trust. What happens when you have both ADHD and trauma, and you can’t always tell which one is behind what you’re experiencing? In this episode of The Self-Belief Podcast, Jenny explores what she has learned about living with both ADHD and trauma, and why the two don’t simply show up separately. After years of understanding many of her experiences through the lens of trauma, Jenny’s ADHD diagnosis gave her another piece of the puzzle. Some of the things she had spent years trying to change weren’t signs that she hadn’t worked hard enough on herself, they were connected to the way her brain works. But ADHD and trauma can also interact.Forgetfulness can become fear of judgement. Overwhelm can be intensified by a situation that doesn’t feel safe. Putting off a task might begin because you don’t know where to start, but become even harder when you’re frightened of getting it wrong.Jenny shares examples from her own life, including why she can happily help somebody else complete a form but can feel completely overwhelmed when the form and responsibility for the outcome belongs to her.She also explores the hidden cost of appearing “high functioning”, and how fear can sometimes look like organisation, preparation or achievement from the outside. In this episode, Jenny talks about:How ADHD and trauma can affect us in similar waysWhy it isn’t always possible to identify where ADHD ends and trauma beginsHow an ADHD difficulty can become connected to fearThe hidden emotional cost of appearing capable and high functioningWhy awareness alone didn’t change some of Jenny’s difficultiesHow practical strategies can support an overwhelmed ADHD brainWhy fear sometimes needs a different kind of supportHow body doubling can support both ADHD and trauma responsesLearning to ask what you need in the moment rather than judging yourself for strugglingListen to the Blame Series here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2BbqcCEpKA9kVOs46RiX1I?si=DuX_3KSKTHKNchM6eWegAwIf you'd like to go back even further, Jenny's Judgement series explores how fear of being judged, self-judgement and other people's opinions can quietly shape the way we see ourselves. What happens when finally getting an answer brings relief but also grief and anger? In Part 4 of my ADHD journey, I’m sharing what happened after my diagnosis, when I began looking back at my life through a completely different lens. For years, I had believed the things I’d been told about myself: that I was difficult, too much, stupid or somehow the problem. My ADHD diagnosis alongside beginning to understand autism and the impact of trauma gave me another way of making sense of my experiences. In this episode, I talk about the connection I began to see between neurodivergence and trauma, why some reactions can look very similar, and how understanding what might be happening underneath our behaviour can help us move away from automatic self-blame.I also explore how this changed my understanding of self-belief. Because self-belief isn’t simply telling yourself you’re good enough. For me, it had to begin with understanding why I reacted in certain ways, why I had tried so hard to be accepted, and why being misunderstood had affected me so deeply. In this episode, I talk about:The relief, grief and anger I experienced after diagnosisLooking back at my life through a neurodivergent lensThe connection between neurodivergence and traumaWhy ADHD, autism and trauma can sometimes create similar-looking reactionsMoving from self-judgement towards understandingFinding strategies that actually support my brainWhy awareness isn't an excuse, it's informationHow understanding myself has changed my relationship with self-beliefYou don’t need to have all the answers about why you react the way you do. Sometimes the first step is simply stopping the automatic blame and asking: what might actually be happening here?Understanding my past hasn’t changed it. But it has changed how I see myself. And now I can understand myself differently. I can be just me and choose to be that on purpose. If something in this episode resonates with you and you’d like further support, head over to my website or socials and connect with me. Getting an ADHD diagnosis later in life can bring far more than relief. In Part 3 of her ADHD journey, Jenny shares the difficult road to getting assessed, the fear that she wouldn’t be believed, and the relief she felt when she finally heard that she did have ADHD.She also explores what came afterwards, the grief for the years she spent not knowing, the anger around things she had been made to believe about herself, and how an adult ADHD diagnosis began to change the way she understood her past and herself.Seeking answersFear of judgementFeeling believedMixed emotionsSelf understandingWhy is getting an ADHD diagnosis so emotional? What does an adult ADHD assessment feel like? How does it feel to be diagnosed with ADHD as an adult? Why can an ADHD diagnosis bring relief? Why can you feel grief after an ADHD diagnosis? Is it normal to feel angry after an ADHD diagnosis? Why did I doubt myself before my ADHD assessment? Why can getting an ADHD diagnosis feel overwhelming? What emotions can come after a late ADHD diagnosis? Can an ADHD diagnosis change how you see your childhood? Why do adults seek an ADHD diagnosis? Can ADHD make you question yourself? Why do women get diagnosed with ADHD later in life? What happens emotionally after an ADHD diagnosis? How can an ADHD diagnosis change how you understand yourself?Next week in Part 4… Jenny explores what happened after diagnosis and how understanding ADHD began to change the way she saw herself, her past and the things she had believed about herself for years.
